Black Feeling Black Talk, by Nikki Giovanni

Black Feeling, Black Talk/Black Judgement is one of the single most important volumes of modern African-American poetry. This book, electrifying generations with its revolutionary phrases and inspiring them with such Nikki Giovanni masterpieces as the lyrical "Nikki-Rosa" and the intimate "Knoxville, Tennessee," is the seminal volume of Nikki Giovanni's body of work. Black Feeling, Black Talk/Black Judgement made Nikki Giovanni famous in 1968, and this reissue of her classic will enthrall those who have always adored her poems--and those who are just getting to know her work.

As a witness to three generations, Nikki Giovanni has perceptively and poetically recorded her observations of both the outside world and the gentle yet enigmatic territory of the self. When her poems first emerged from the Black Rights Movement in the late 1960s, she immediately became a celebrated and controversial poet of the era. Written in one of the most commanding voices to grace America's political and poetic landscape at the end of the twentieth century, Nikki Giovanni's poems embody the fearless passion and spirited wit for which she is beloved and revered.

On Hearing
"The Girl with
the Flaxen Hair"

He has a girl who has flaxen hair
My woman has hair of gray
I have a woman who wakes up at dawn
His girl can sleep through the day

His girl has hands soothed with perfumes sweet
she has lips soft and pink
My woman's lips burn in midday sun
My woman's hands--black like ink

He can make music to please his girl
Night comes I'm tired and beat
He can make notes, make her heart beat fast
Night comes I want off my feet

Maybe if I don't pick cotton so fast
Maybe I'd sing pretty too
Sing to my woman with hair of gray
Croon softly, Baby it's you

REVOLUTIONARY RHETORIC
By Bonita L. Davis
A new and dynamic poet is in town. Her words are fiery and militant. She takes no prisoners and makes you think. Are you ready to listen to this young woman? Black Feeling, Black Talk, Black Judgement is Nikki Giovanni's first public collection of poems. In this slender volume we are caught up in the Black Revolution of the 60's. Nikki's voice is loud, clear and inspires all who will dare hear her.
You will enjoy this work of the young Nikki as she articulates the cause of Black Nationalism and the Black Arts movement. At such a young age she has so much insight but her poetry moves beyond revolutionary rhetoric. Listen to "Nikki-Rosa" as she contemplates childhood rememberances. Attune your ears to "The Great Pax Whitie" where peace is still. Allow yourself to be challenged with "The True Import of Present Dialogue"and see what you are made of.
Nikki will make you uncomfortable but will raise your consciousness. The only "flaw" of this reissue is the fact that it needs a new introduction to put it in its historical context for new readers. A first time reader would find many of her poems dated due to their ignorance of the time. The collection gives us a glimpse of an emerging young Black poet who is committed to her art and to the revolution. Enjoy this militant young voice who refuses to compromise.

A little intimidating, but...
By A Customer
At the suggestion of my 11th grade English teacher, I decided to check Nikki Giovanni out. This was the first of her books that I looked into, and as a white girl, I was intimidated. The angriest of her poems are contained in this work, but the anger is righteous. In addition to her militant poems, there are also some gorgeous ones. Though I love this book and I feel that any true fan of Giovanni should read it, I would not recommend it as a first book. Instead, pick up "Cotton Candy on a Rainy Day" or "Love Poems".

The Nikki I love
By A Customer
This is my favorite book of poems! It is filled with her militant black power poetry that is characterized by the era in which it was written. A must have for any Nikki fan or any poetry lover. Note: not for the sensitive reader

"What a faith they had in cheeses !"
By Bob Newman
When I was a graduate student in anthropology several decades ago, Levi-Strauss was close to God and structuralism was the most modern method yet created to perceive other societies. My fellow students and I dreamed of being able to apply structuralist principles to the societies we would research. Some of us did, others did not. Yet the fascination with discovering underlying organizational principles in any society still tickles all these years later. The anthropological world in general has moved on. I still have a sneaking admiration for somebody, like Sandra Ott, who could, in a relatively brief period of field work, uncover and document structural patterns in a society and language far from her own. One question, I believe, that young anthropologists of today might pose is, having discovered those principles, what do you do with them ? Culture, or just human life, is so complex, so diverse. Motivations are so multilayered. Is this the best method of description possible ? Especially since the society in question, one of the most isolated of French Basque villages in Soule departement along the Spanish border, has no doubt changed greatly in the 23 years between her research and when I read the book. Are those principles still operational ?
THE CIRCLE OF MOUNTAINS is a carefully-written, no, painstakingly-written volume which reveals an ethnographer of great skill. Although I would by no means recommend it to a casual reader, it is good anthropology. Like many lesser books of its type, it is full of incredible ethnographic detail, thickly studded with Basque terms and phrases, which will be useful only to Basques or to people who study them professionally. These terms also persuade readers that Ott knew her stuff, a definite plus for her academic supervisors, not so pleasant for others. Teachers of anthropology, if they are looking for a structuralist work, may find THE CIRCLE OF MOUNTAINS just the thing. If anthropology, structural or not, is the art of description and if capturing descriptions of disappearing worlds is important, then Otts book is praiseworthy. Aldikatzia and ngr, two Basque principles of social organization, found in many different contexts in the village society, are neatly defined and described. Aldikatzia or serial replacement orders relationships and roles within systems while ngr or rotation is a principle by means of which systems are ordered. The former is visible to all, the latter is more abstract. The village itself is seen as a circle, neighborly relations similary circular. In addition, there is a marvelous parallel drawn between conception and birth of children and the making of cheese. The Basques saw their special cheeses, made in the mountain huts by male shepherds while they cared for their flocks in the high pastures in summer, as similar in a wide variety of ways to the babies produced by women in the village below. The shepherds were inordinately proud of these mountain cheeses, which were strictly differentiated from cheeses made in the home proper. Rennet curdled milk to form a cheese, they thought, just as human semen curdled red blood to form an infant. The cheese maker up in the mountains was even called the housewife at the times when he made cheese. The analogy is continued in far greater detail. The men recreate the female reproductive role up in the shepherding huts, and re-enact the birth process by making cheeses. It is a reversal of roles, not unknown in other parts of the world, though the cheese/baby analogy was a first for me.
Douglass book on Basques, Death in Murelaga will not satisfy many readers, even dedicated anthropologists. Kurlanskys A Basque History of the World is readable, but lightweight and diffuse. Perhaps for those seeking knowlege about the Basques, Otts book, in the tradition of Goldilocks, is just right, though it may prove too detailed and narrowly-focussed for general readers. 4 stars for anthropology, 3 stars for readability.

Death Valley Scotty, by Robert Carter

Around the beginning of the 20th Century, Walter E. Scott - Scotty to his friends - was passing through Death Valley, California, when he happened upon a dead man. Beside the corpse was a dog dying of thirst, and in the man's pocket was a piece of rock glittering with pure gold ... So begins one of the most endearing tales to come out of the American West. Scotty seized he day. He buried the body, saved the dog and worked out a plan that would change not only his own life, but that of many others. One of the lives Scotty changed was that of Albert M. Johnson, a wealthy but disabled Chicagoan who yearned for adventure. Johnson wanted for nothing in material terms, but he had suffered a broken back in the train wreck that had killed his father. Despite inheriting the biggest insurance company in the Midwest, he was not a happy man, until Scotty appeared, that is. Scotty loved to have a good time and to be the centre of attention. He was a romantic soul, a natural-born showman with a talent for making things happen. He used whatever money that came his way to enjoy life and enhance his reputation as a gold miner, but he also enriched the lives of others in a way that was his and his alone. Scotty played the newspapers of William Randolph Hearst at their own game. He ran financial risks that would make the average person dizzy, but he remained the kind of man that folks always wanted to see win. Death Valley Scotty is a tightly crafted story that follows the life of a loveable rogue through more ups and downs than you'll find in the Sierra Nevada. See how his luck changes as his plans start to unravel. Follow him as he works himself out of yet another tight corner and stays one step ahead of the law. Who knows what will happen next? "Death Valley Scotty" is reminiscent of "True Grit." It has the uplift of "It’s a Wonderful Life." Set in a time when freedom seemed easier to find, this is a read that will surely make you smile.

About the Author
I was born in Staffordshire, near Etruria, the place made famous by Josiah Wedgwood, but was brought up in Sydney, Australia and later in Lancashire, England. I studied astrophysics at Newcastle University, where I started the student science fiction society. Writing novels has always played a part in my life, and I've tried to see the world enough to be able to write fiction with the help of personal experience. After university, the US oil industry was booming so I went to Dallas, Texas, later on I worked on rigs in various parts of the Middle East and the war-torn heart of Africa. I was aboard the Ron Tappmeyer, a rig that blew out in the Persian Gulf, killing 19 men. It was dangerous work, but well-paid, and it took me to places that outsiders rarely see, like the Rub-al-Khali of Arabia and hard-to-reach parts of equatorial Africa. When I left the oilfields, I spent time on travel, first to East Berlin and Warsaw, then to Moscow and Leningrad. From there I took the Trans-Siberian railway to Japan. In Hong Kong, I worked on a road survey, took tea with the heir of the last king of Upper Burma near Mandalay, and on the path to Everest base camp just happened to run into Sir Edmund Hillary. After traveling around most of India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, I returned home and took up a job with the BBC. Four years later, I left BBC TV to write. I finally settled in London, but I still like to head off to interesting parts when time allows.

Amazing true story how lives cross and the beauty of the simplicity of friendship
By Valerie Caraotta
Despite the reality that this is a true story, numerous times you will ask yourself how Walter E Scott, better known as Scotty, could continually live a life of deception in the way he presented himself to the public. Rare in character and bold in pursuit, his deceptive schemes would afford him thousands of dollars on a Peerless Mine that never existed but attracted the attention of wealthy businessmen.

You might say Scotty was determined to live in the moment of all the riches he accrued while liberally giving away huge amounts of money and gaining increasing popularity. The higher up you are however the harder you fall and the deception would be revealed in the courtroom.

It is not an ending you would expect however as wealthy Albert M. Johnson found the friendship and adventure in Scotty refreshing to him. Johnson, a Christian man may have met the provision of God in ways money could not buy through Scotty. So true is it that good friendship and companionship cannot be set to a price tag. Though ironic to many how the very wealthy can find a common thread with the very poor, truth is that we all long to laugh unabandonedly and to leave the worry and stresses of life behind if even for a brief period.

A castle that remains today to tourists in Death Valley is far more than a gigantic structure. It is an embodiment of truth that when we all strip off our masks and become who we are to the core, that we can find ourselves in union with others that defy typical stereotypes.

In creative written form, allow award winning author Robert Carter to take you away to an adventure you will never forget. You may temporarily lose yourself but come away thoroughly satisfied with the mission. Amaze yourself how situations in life can turn into manifold blessings yet to be realized.

I highly recommend this book along with the other great works from Robert Carter.

Loved this book about a colorful rogue of American history
By Great Historicals
One of the most colorful, intriguing, and notorious men of 19th and 20th century America is a man named Walter Edward Perry Scott, who became known as Death Valley Scotty. At the age of 11, he left home to ranch with his two brothers in Nevada until he joined Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show as a performer. When he met and fell in love with Miss Ella Milius, they moved to Colorado to begin a gold mining operation. When it failed, Scotty tried to return to the Wild West Show, but they turned him away.

It was then that Scotty turned to being a con man, and therein came his successes. He conned a New York business man into investing in a fake gold mine. Using the newspapers to gain notoriety and fuel speculation, he kept his investors on the hook with lies. When they began to doubt him and they demanded to see the gold as proof, the bag of gold was supposedly stolen. Thousands of dollars were lost in the investment.

Scotty kept his notoriety sparked when he claimed he could break the cross country train speed record and successfully broke the record by mere minutes, earning him coverage on all the front pages of the newspapers at the time.
Scotty continued with numerous other mining cons, never confessing or admitting his falsehoods. Soon, to keep up his charades, he began stealing from other mines to prove he had the ore to prove his story. He landed in jail because he was sued by his creditors based on his outrageous claims of wealth and mining. He even built a huge castle in Death Valley on land disputed not to be owned by him.

I had never heard of Death Valley Scotty, but by the time I finished reading the novel, I gained a strong understanding of the man, his passion for life, and his bold character. Robert Carter's Novel about Scotty's life brings to life the motivations and dreams of this colorful historical figure. Sticking close to the facts and highly researched, Carter's fascination for Scotty highlights every page. The book is detailed and well written, and although many of Scotty's activities are definitely criminal, Carter balances this by showing us what motivates and drives this infamous character, giving the reader lots to sympathize with. I definitely recommend this book to lovers of American History.

A great Western story
By Jacob A J Taylor
I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is a most delightful book. It is Americana at its best. Scotty's western-slang is precious and funny; "When you keep a coyote for a pet, you gotta think that someday he'll go wild on you." He also questions his time and place: "So many free schools, and yet so much ignorance in the land! I declare, I do not know what to make of it."
For some, I'm sure, Scotty was nothing more than a scoundrel, but after you read Robert Carter's biographical account you will see a much more complex character, and you may end up liking him, as I did.
There are many interesting phrases and sentences in the book, one explains `a kind of big fiddle' while others give us good advice; for example, he feels that we all need: "A place you can go to think, be at peace with yourself, a place where you can listen to the quiet and let it heal your soul." He was referring, of course, to the magnificent place we now know as Death Valley National Park located in Southern California and Nevada, where Toloache told Scotty "The Secret of Life". I cannot tell it to you here, but rest assured, as soon as I'm done with this review, I will go and get me some -Oh, yes, you can buy it!- if you know where to go.
Great reading, you will love it! Five stars
Jake Taylor

Just a Few Words, Mr. Lincoln: The Story of the Gettysburg Address (Penguin Young Readers, Level 4), by Jean Fritz

Abraham Lincoln was one busy man. He had a country to run. And a war to win. And a family to care for. But when it came time to honor all the soldiers who had died in the great battle of Gettysburg, President Lincoln still took time to say a few words. Two hundred and seventy-one to be exact. Here is a true story about a great man and his famous speech.

From Publishers Weekly
The All Aboard Reading series adds another of Fritz's ( The Double Life of Pocahantas ; Can't You Make Them Behave, King George? ) lively titles illuminating an episode in American history. Here Fritz explains that President Lincoln had two "big jobs": he had to free the slaves and he had to win the Civil War. She focuses on the year 1863 when, after 23,000 Union soldiers were killed in the Battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln was asked to speak at a ceremony honoring the fallen troops. Dispelling traditional lore that the President scratched out his speech on the back of an envelope during the train ride to Gettysburg, Fritz explains that it was prepared in advance, needing only a last-minute "lick." Making history tangible in a delightfully down-to-earth way, the author writes that Lincoln's address was very brief; after uttering a mere 271 words, "he was finished. It took longer to boil an egg." Featuring typeface, vocabulary and themes carefully geared to her intended audience, the text informally yet ably conveys the significance of Lincoln's eloquent speech, which is reprinted on the book's final page. Interspersed among Robinson's subdued, well-populated drawings are several period photos. Ages 7-9.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-3-A book that focuses on Lincoln and his Gettysburg Address, providing lively anecdotes about the man's work and responsibilities as president, his special relationship with his son, and about his famous remarks. The text of the speech appears at the end of the book. Fritz's narrative has a strong, fresh appeal. However, there's a lack of specificity in some of the details and a somewhat annoying quantity of sentence fragments. Several archival photographs are interspersed with Robinson's attractive, realistic watercolors. But while it is stated that the crowd is to have numbered 20,000 at Gettysburg, the illustrations give the impression of a much smaller group. A map, which shows the North and South in blue and gray respectively, doesn't include state names. Also, no sources are listed. While readers will certainly enjoy the very human portrayal of Lincoln, it is doubtful whether the larger historical issues will be made clear to them.

From Booklist
Gr. 1-3. The circumstances surrounding Abraham Lincoln's famous 1863 speech at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, are brought to life in this engrossing, easy-to-read story. Fritz provides a great deal of information in just a few pages, including both standard historical data (what was the Civil War and why was Gettysburg so important?) and the personal anecdotes that make her books so appealing. Robinson's watercolor illustrations mesh nicely with the text, and the addition of a few photos and charts further enhances the recounting. Unfortunately, the editing of Fritz's elegant prose into an easy-reader format leaves something to be desired. Although the wording sounds fine when read aloud, the transcription contains enough sentence fragments to send a reading teacher into a state of apoplexy. Even so, this is a fascinating look at an important event that is sure to appeal to young history buffs. Kay Weisman

The true story of a great man and his famous speech
By Lawrance Bernabo
The Gettysburg Address is one of the two most famous speeches in American history, the other being Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream Speech." But Lincoln's speech is the most important oration in our nation's history because before these 271 words were uttered at Gettysburg the United States did not really pay attention to the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and the idea that "all men are created equal." At the dedication of the National Cemetary at Gettysburg Lincoln declared that those who died did so in defense of that proposition. From that point on, all of the advances in civil rights in this country can be tied to the Gettysburg Address. When the nation was founded "men" meant free, adult, white, male, property owners. Consider today what is meant by "men" when we talk about equality in this country and you have an idea of what Lincoln set in motion. Without Lincoln's speech and the Union winning the Civil War, King would never have given his speech.
The only real shortcoming of "Just a Few Words, Mr. Lincoln: The Story of the Gettysbug Address" by Jean Fritz is that it fails to address the significance of the oration beyond the idea that it was a speech to remember. Fritz focuses on the story, both in general terms of the Civil War and the importance of the Battle of Gettysburg, and the specifics of the occasion for the speech, including the sickness of Lincoln's son Tad and the lengthy oration by Edward Everett. The complete text of the speech is provided at the back of the book, which is a Level 3 All Aboard Reading book aimed at grades 2-3. The illustrations are mostly watercolors by Charles Robinson although there are also some historic photographs of Lincoln and his son. The important thing is that here is a book that tells the story of a great American speech and at least introduces to young students the idea that words can make a difference in the history of a nation.
