Accompanied by a CD of recordings by Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones and a bogus taped confession staged as a publicity stunt in the early 1980s, this book reveals the identity of what it claims is Jones's true murderer. The author has built up a record of Jones's life, his financial position at the time of his death, and a chronology of events in the days and hours leading up to it. A new pathologist's report and a re-examination of the police evidence corroborate both the stories of those who were present at Jones's house on the fatal day and a sworn affidavit from the man who witnessed the alleged murderer's confession. The book includes previously-unpublished photographs of Jones at home, and of the alleged murderer.

Body Work: Beauty and Self-Image in American Culture, by Debra Gimlin

Today women are lifting weights to build muscle, wrapping their bodies in seaweed to reduce unwanted water retention, attending weigh-ins at diet centers, and devoting themselves to many other types of "body work." Filled with the voices of real women, this book unravels the complicated emotional and intellectual motivations that drive them as they confront American culture's unreachable beauty ideals. This powerful feminist study lucidly and compellingly argues against the idea that the popularity of body work means that women are enslaved to a male-fashioned "beauty myth." Essential reading for understanding current debates on beauty, Body Work demonstrates that women actually use body work to escape that beauty myth.

Debra Gimlin focuses on four sites where she conducted in-depth research--a beauty salon, aerobics classes, a plastic surgery clinic, and a social and political organization for overweight women. The honest and provocative interviews included in this book uncover these women's feelings about their bodies, their reasons for attempting to change or come to terms with them, and the reactions of others in their lives. These interviews show that women are redefining their identities through their participation in body work, that they are working on their self-images as much as on their bodies. Plastic surgery, for example, ultimately is an empowering life experience for many women who choose it, while hairstyling becomes an arena for laying claim to professional and social class identities.

This book develops a convincing picture of how women use body work to negotiate the relationship between body and self, a process that inevitably involves coming to terms with our bodies' deviation from cultural ideals. One of the few studies that includes empirical evidence of women's own interpretations of body work, this important project is also based firmly in cultural studies, symbolic interactionism, and feminism. With this book, Debra Gimlin adds her voice to those of scholars who are now looking beyond the surface of the beauty myth to the complex reality of women's lives.

From the Inside Flap
"Beautifully written, cleverly argued, and skillfully researched, Debra Gimlin's Body Work goes beyond the argument that the beauty industry exists only to control women. Instead, Gimlin examines women's relationship to beauty from a feminist sociological perspective, finding that women are not dupes of the beauty industry but rather use body work in both empowering and degrading ways. It's about time a sociologist delved into women's complicated relationship to the beauty industry!"—Verta Taylor, author of Rock-a-By Baby: Feminism, Self-Help, and Postpartum Depression

"This fascinating study reveals how changing the body is really an effort to reconstruct the self-from aerobics, cosmetic surgery, and hair salon makeovers to therapeutic groups about accepting one's "fat" body. Gimlin fuses theoretical acuity with tender analysis, enabling the reader to engage critically and empathetically with these quotidian social constructionists. With efforts to transform the body becoming ever more frenzied as Baby Boomers age, this book is both timely and important."— Michael Kimmel, author of Manhood in America: A Cultural History

"Gimlin effectively demonstrates how the business of beauty is ultimately not about abstruse theories but rather about how women negotiate beauty to transact in everyday life. This perception that beauty may be the one area where the personal is not political recasts all theories previously forwarded on the subject and adds significantly to the literature about the culture of beauty."—Raquel Scherr, author of Face Value: The Politics of Beauty

"This thoughtful, interesting, and well-written book emphasizes the complexities of contemporary U.S. women as they negotiate identity through both participation and resistance to dominant beauty ideologies."—Sarah Banet-Weiser, author of The Most Beautiful Girl in the World

"Much more than a straightforward feminist critique of the beauty industry, Body Work offers a nuanced and sensitive analysis of the types of work that women do to construct and to maintain an identity with which they can live comfortably, steering clear of representations of women as passive victims of oppressive structures."—Nilufer Isvan, Assistant Professor of Sociology, State University of New York at Stony Brook

Body Perfect
By A Customer
Gimlin achieves her purpose of sharing information on the justification behind body work through the format of her book. First, she presents her research then she provides a conclusion. Gimlin does this for each chapter, which changes as she looks at the different forms of body work. This allows the reader to assess the work and come to their own conclusion before reading her thoughts. This directly incorporates the reader into the book, which maintains their interest. The format is a major strength of the work.
Another strength of the book is the quotes from interviews that Gimlin conducts with the subjects and her field research. The interviews add reality to
the work and also encourage the interest of the reader. In Sociology, field research involves the researcher actually being in the environment of the subjects and even participating in their activities. This also adds to the element of realism and gives an everyday perspective of what women go through. These elements combine together to add personality to the work.
A weakness of the book would be the author's focus on only female body work. For comparison purposes, including males in the study would open up interpretations for the double standards placed, or shed light on whether men have the same stigmas to overcome. Gimlin answers the question on her exclusion of males by stating, "While contemporary men must undoubtedly work to negotiate the relationship between body and self, women, more than men, face social pressures that make the negotiation difficult and complicated" (Gimlin, 12).
An aspect of the book that I truly enjoyed was its feminist sociological viewpoint. So often we only see situations from a male viewpoint, even if the literature is geared towards women. Gimlin takes a whole new look at the beauty industry and its relationship to women and comes up with a perspective of the self-empowerment of women. We are not forced to conform by society, but we choose. As a young woman on my way out on my own, I value this book. It gives women a new outlook so that instead of feeling helpless and pressured to look a certain way in order to succeed and be happy, they can change or not change their body based on one thing: their own happiness. Gimlin's stress on
empowerment is something every woman can take away from this book. Her message is reinforced by her format and the purpose of the book is accomplished.

From Booklist
The conceit is complicated. The latest in the ’Ology series, this invites readers to become members of S.P.A.C.E. (the Society for the Promotion of Alien Contact with Earth). A sometimes uneasy mix of fact and fiction fills this oversize book, which has flaps to flip, a detecting mirror, and a whole bunch of “information” about “our alien neighbors.” Puzzles and brainteasers push kids to “achieve enlightenment.” An online component offers mobile text rewards, and those willing to pay up to 10 bucks will receive mobile messages and an “Intergalactic ID Card” that allows access to an online site. More than most will want to know, but the most dedicated alien aficionados will appreciate the effort. Grades 5-8. --Ilene Cooper

About the Author
Dugald A. Steer, Editor: "With what trepidation I sat down to give my editorial attentions to what was clearly the masterwork of a very erudite man, should be obvious to all who read this book." So begins a letter, written in 1894, from Dugald Steer to an Oxford friend. The letter goes on to explain how a chance meeting with Dr. Ernest Drake at the BULL'S HEAD TAVERN in Dorking, Surrey, made him more than a little curious. Skeptical at first, he took up Dr. Drake's offer to meet him at his house and St. Leonard's Forest, and to attend one of the S.A.S.D. meetings in London. There, he became further involved in Dr. Drake's work, joining him on an expedition to Scotland to try and estimate the hunting range of the Dornoch Wyrm. As he writes, the trip was, "a cause of some emotion, as many of my relative, particularly the Ross branch, come from so near."
Douglas Carrel, Chief Draughtsman: A native of Scotland, Douglas Carrel was clearly a dragonologist of some standing, and often accompanied Dr. Drake on some of his more fruitful expeditions. In a letter from Constantinople to the editor he says, "It is with considerable sense of honour, and no small amount of pride, that I lend my hand to the compiling of this most worthy volume . . . Ultimately, I feel that all of us--within this privileged circle in particular--are duty-bound to preserve and perpetuate the love and lore of dragons."
Helen Ward, Scientific Artist: Helen Ward trained as an illustrator at Brighton School of Art, although it is not known exactly when she came into contact with Dr. Drake. However a quote from her autobiography makes some things clear: "As a child I dreamed of dragons. When age allowed, I traveled.Unfortunately, several expeditions to Europe and one to that part of Russia known as Finland specifically to capture the likeness of a live dragon have ended in failure. The creatures seemed deliberately elusive . . .. With the help of descriptions, notes, and detailed drawings made by others I have managed to illustrate these majestic creatures to the satisfaction of those more fortunate and better-informed dragonologists."
Wayne Anderson, Pictorial Artist: Interested in cryptozoology from an early age, Wayne Anderson first came into contact with S.A.S.D. at one of their meetings in Wyvern Way in London. It was after a couple of trips with Drake--to the Alps in 1878 and to Scotland in 1880--that Wayne realized his early dragon drawings were, in fact, more life-like than he could have realised. Like most of the other collaborators on DRAGONOLOGY, he has contributed to many other books for children. He enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with Helen Ward that resulted in books such as THE TIN FOREST and THE DRAGON MACHIINE.
Nghiem Ta, Artistic Direction: Dr. Drake met Nghiem Ta in the Fukien (now Fujian) Province of China where she was working in her grandfather's bookshop. Their shared interest in dragons became evident when he showed her a copy of the fabled DRAGON SUTRA of Hong Wei, which the monks of that monastery made for him as a gift. He asked Miss Ta if such a revered object could be bound into a book and was so impressed with her work that he later invited her to London to oversee the creation of DRAGONOLOGY.

Family Fun!
By Aimee Brown
Have you ever had your kids fight over a book? I cannot recall that ever happening in my house. Yet, when my kids laid eyes on Alienology, that is exactly what happened. I cannot tell you how immensely satisfying that was. So, why all the pushing, grabbing, running and hiding?

Alienology is just fun. There are fun pictures, flaps to lift, stories to read and secrets to be found. Around the dinner table we explored the book, laughing and talking. We learned the universal gestures for aliens. We learned about alien brains and the evolution of eyeballs. There were things to touch, but be careful of the S.L.I.M.E! (Surface-Living Intelligent Multiplying Endolith) It will consume you in order to grow! Luckily, I was one of the few humans that are immune to it. There are charts to compare different species of aliens, and it tells you which are friendly and which are not. Do you want to know how big they are? How long they live? Where they live? It's all in this book. As my kids would say, "It's awesome!"

I gave this book 5 stars because it was a book that all 3 of my kids wanted to read. 1 boy, 2 girls. Ages 8-15. I even wanted to read it. It was a book we could all share. We enjoyed going through it together and when all is said and done, those are the best kinds of moments.

Not on par with other ology books
By Walter Wu
I own just about every ology product available - all of the dragon-, ocean-, pirate-, monster-, myth-, vampire-, spy-, egypt- and wizardology books, as well as the dragonology model sets and even the board and card games.

What I liked about the other books in the series is how they fictionalized the "lost book" account of the subject matter in a serious fashion. This made the other books a much more immersive experience for the reader.

This alienology book, however, while also utilizing the same "lost book" methodology, does so in a very hokie, non-serious manner. Alien abduction stories in a supermarket tabloid, such as the Weekly World News, are almost scholarly in comparison to this book.

While some younger kids may not notice this stylistic difference from the past ology books, I think the more intelligent/insightful/older kids and adults will see the difference and will be disappointed by this addition to the ology series. Did the ology company hire a new writer to author this book? It sure seems so.

Full of fun, creative art work and challenging information.
By KidsReads
Could you identify someone from another planet? Have you ever been suspicious about the person you sat next to on the bus or that weird new neighbor? There are mysterious things happening everyday in our world, things that seem to have no explanation or that are given very flimsy explanations. Are all those reported "sightings" of lights in the sky and possible spacecraft crashes really just some kind of government cover-up? If these situations and questions ever cross your mind, then perhaps it's time for you to pick up the latest book on aliens by Professor Alan Grey.

ALIENOLOGY is the book that Professor Grey found in a used bookstore under a stack of old magazines from the '60s. He knew immediately what an important find this was and has worked hard to put it into a format that is appealing and chock full of amazing information. For instance, there are many highly unusual samples that readers can actually touch, like the specimen of protectonium, which is a material used in the clothing worn by the Greys to protect them from the cold.

In Chapter Four, "Humanoid Aliens," we learn that the Greys are highly intelligent beings that have visited and continue to visit the earth to study humans, and that they are in a constant war to defeat S.L.I.M.E., the deadliest threat to the galaxy. S.L.I.M.E. (Surface-Living Intelligent Multiplying Endolith) "is a single consciousness that takes the form of oozing, glutinous patches of mucus, which are spreading rapidly throughout the Milky Way." A complete description of this dreaded purple gook is given in Chapter Six, which also contains a horrible picture of it devouring a Grey.

Each chapter of this incredible book covers important topics and answers questions about extraterrestrials, such as "Alien Biology and Physiology" (Have you ever seen the autopsies on aliens?) and "Alien Communication" (If the aliens are communicating, what are they trying to say?). Included in each chapter is a LOGIC TEST for those who are brave enough to carefully study the evidence offered.

Along with all the detailed examples and specimens included in this volume, there are opportunities to embrace the digital experience of ALIENOLOGY. By using your mobile phone, you can download ringtones and animated alien cards to trade. The whole interactive experience can be enhanced when you [...] where you can play games, explore the Intergalactic Council Space Station and create your own Intergalactic Council ID card. There are charges for some of these digital experiences, so read the instructions carefully and make sure you have your parent's consent.

In the Afterword, Professor Grey presents more tests to affirm that the cadet is an able candidate to fight non-friendly aliens. Answers to the logic questions are also provided on an Internet site by entering a code. The professor says that his friend, who just happens to be an extraterrestrial, has assisted him with this book. Now what can that mean? It means that all of these things must be read very, very carefully, doesn't it?

Like all previous 'Ologies volumes, this one is full of fun, creative art work and challenging information. In the very beginning, the publisher explains that the book is actually a facsimile edition, since the infamous "Men in Black" have not returned the original manuscript. They also point out that all information provided cannot be confirmed and that, to date, "the publisher has found no evidence that aliens really do exist..."

The Connected Company, by Dave Gray

With a foreword by Alex Osterwalder.

The future of work is already here.

Customers are adopting disruptive technologies faster than your company can adapt. When your customers are delighted, they can amplify your message in ways that were never before possible. But when your company’s performance runs short of what you’ve promised, customers can seize control of your brand message, spreading their disappointment and frustration faster than you can keep up.

To keep pace with today’s connected customers, your company must become a connected company. That means deeply engaging with workers, partners, and customers, changing how work is done, how you measure success, and how performance is rewarded. It requires a new way of thinking about your company: less like a machine to be controlled, and more like a complex, dynamic system that can learn and adapt over time.

Connected companies have the advantage, because they learn and move faster than their competitors. While others work in isolation, they link into rich networks of possibility and expand their influence.

Connected companies around the world are aggressively acquiring customers and disrupting the competition. In The Connected Company, we examine what they’re doing, how they’re doing it, and why it works. And we show you how your company can use the same principles to adapt—and thrive—in today’s ever-changing global marketplace.

Anatomy of a Social Network

Network researcher Ron Burt has identified two types of activities that create value in small-world networks: brokerage and closure.

Brokerage is about developing the weak ties: building bridges and relationships between clusters. Brokers are in a position to see the differences between groups, to cross-pollinate ideas, and to develop the differences into new ideas and opportunities.

Closure is about developing the strong ties: building alignment, trust, reputation and community within the clusters. Trust-builders are in a position to understand the deep connections that bond the people together and give them common identity and purpose.

These two kinds of activity, bridging and trust-building, demonstrate two very different ways that people and organizations can bring value to a network: Bridging leads to innovation and trust-building leads to group performance. The value that comes from these activities is known as social capital. Like every other form of capital, social capital represents stored value—in this case, relationship value—that can be translated into meaningful and tangible benefits. The power of an individual node in any network can be considered along three dimensions: Degree, closeness and betweenness.

Degree is the number of connections a node has to other nodes; for example the number of people in your family, or on your team at work, or the number of “friends” attached to your Facebook account. For an organization it could be the number of sales affiliates or business partners.

The value of a high degree is potential: the potential to connect and interact with a great number of other nodes in the network.

Closeness is a measure of how easily a node can connect with other nodes. For example you are probably very close to your team at work because it’s easy to connect to them: you can contact any person at any time. But you might be further away from other people in your company. Some you might be able to catch by walking down the hall or popping into their office, while to see others you might need an appointment, or you might need to be introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Anyone who has tried to make a connection on LinkedIn knows that the greater the distance, the harder it is to make a connection.

The value of closeness is ease of connection: The shorter the distance between you and other nodes, the fewer network “hops” you need to make, the easier it is for you to make connections when you need to.

Betweenness indicates the degree to which a node forms a bridge or critical link between other nodes. For example, many executives are protected from distractions by executive assistants or secretaries who act as gatekeepers, who control access to the executive’s time and attention.

The value of betweenness is the power you have to block or grant access to others. The more nodes that depend on you to make connections for them, the greater your potential value to them and thus the greater your power.

Thus, the most powerful person or organization in any network is one that has a high number of potential connections, all of which are relatively close and thus easily accessible, while at the same time enjoying a position within the network such that it can choose to block or grant access to other nodes.

Gems if you dig for them...
By renaissance geek
I'll start out by saying I'm not a natural business book reader; I come from a science background and while I have an interest in business I can't say that I've read in strategy books in the past. While I found a number of interesting ideas scattered through the book I found the overall presentation somewhat nebulous, unconvincing and ultimately unsatisfying. The basic theme of 18th century top down management processes just won't cut it in the fast paced 21st century is vitally important; though arguably painfully obvious. The trouble is you don't really need a whole book to tell you this; what you do need a book to tell you is how to put this into practice. What you get a couple of slim chapters at the end of the book with some vague pointers on how to build a more connected and responsive company and a vast quantity of anecdotes and comments from various business luminaries. And the jargon, oh my lord the jargon!

Realistically the book could have been half the size and lost no content and a slightly more formal approach with something akin to case studies rather than an anecdotal approach would have been enormously useful. There are some gems buried in the book and there are certainly many companies out there that would benefit enormously from taking these ideas on board but tidying up the wooly writing, tightening the architecture and losing the ersatz sketch diagrams would make it a much more satisfying read.

More business consultation from the Dachis Group
By Tom Sales
In April I reviewed "Social Business by Design" by EVP Dion Hinchcliffe of The Dachis Group, noting that Dachis seems well positioned to guide its clients into the social business realm. Now we have "The Connected Company" by Dave Gray, SVP of the Dachis Group, offering another perspective on how companies must engage their employees, partners and customers if they are to survive in an environment of continuous change. Hinchcliffe's book was distinctive in dedicating much less focus on the technology aspects of adopting social business than other books like it. Gray's book is even more focused on the business, cultural and motivational necessities if companies are to succeed.

Often technology and the sheer coolness of tech companies (Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon) inspire business leaders to emulate them and all of us to wish we worked for companies like them. The focus in both of these books is on business strategy. The results of companies that have committed to getting connected (IBM, GE, Apple, Google, Vanguard Group, Amazon and others) indicate that working in more engaged ways is becoming mainstream. This seems great for the Dachis group because they can now function as business consultants beyond just technical or Web consulting.

I loved how Gray designed the flow and presentation of the book to practice what he's preaching. His Table of Contents is 15 Kindle pages long, offering links to chapters and subsections of chapters throughout. In addition to the ease of going right to what you're interested in reading, this enables the reader to jump around as they hopefully start planning out how they will apply these strategies in their own companies. Gray also uses his own graphics and illustrations throughout to clarify his discussions--many of which he also uses in his blogs and slideshows elsewhere.

The book is divided into 5 parts. The first part provides the rationale for why companies need to get connected, stating that customers are changing and expressing their opinions so easily and quickly now that only adaptive companies can keep up. Gray establishes his treatment followed throughout the book by starting with case studies about how several companies learned dramatically that they could not keep up with posts and messaging that were coming from both inside and outside their respective organizations. His writing is clear and precise, introducing and establishing examples and metaphors (e.g., cities and cars are examples of connected systems) that he then uses later throughout the other parts. Many of his references come from Gray's readings and interviews, and he references those at the end of each chapter so the reader can dig down for further detail. By the end of Part One, we know that services (or customer experiences) are not strictly under the company's control; customers each have their own definitions and expectations of how they want to be served and companies and their employees must be prepared to deliver different experiences according to each person's expectations.

Based on that good foundation of what customers want in the first 7 chapters, Part Two then explains what a connected company is and how it can respond to those customer expectations. Gray establishes that knowing their true purpose (not just making profits) distinguishes connected companies. He works through famous examples of how IBM and GE re-made themselves and then through additional examples (Southwest Airlines, Ritz Carlton). He also introduces how many of these companies have adopted the Net Promoter Score as a way to address customers who hate their experiences.

In Part Three we learn how connected companies (Netflix, Whole Foods, Nordstrom's) use pods to interact with customers, and how pods are like smaller versions of the overall company but with the ability and data to make their own self-directed decisions. This part is where there is the greatest focus on systems, software and platforms but it is all done at a higher, more conceptual level to understand how these pods can be supported, not controlled. In Part Four, Gray describes how connected companies are led, differentiating the roles at the pod level, for leaders and for managers. And finally in Part Five, he describes how to get started in transitioning to a connected company and some warning signs along the way.

"Social Business by Design" reassured senior leaders that social media and business was not just a technical play. "The Connected Company" arms them with greater understanding so they can make the organizational changes necessary to make each employee an important contributor. At certain points, I could see how Gray was synthesizing many of the same books I've read into a compelling narrative, and so it was kind of an outsider's perspective on what he sees happening across many companies. This is not typical, as most authors seem to have been more engaged in the inside of the companies and changes they're writing about. What makes it all work is the way he puts it all together to guide companies to the next level.

The Importance of Being Connected
By Michael A Dila
Dave Gray is a smart and thoughtful man. And in 2010 he published a very valuable book, called Gamestorming: A Playbook for Innovators, Rulebreakers, and Changemakers.

This year, with the publication of The Connected Company, Dave Gray has written an important book. Like Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline, Gray has placed the idea of the organization as a learning and evolving organism at the center of an argument for how the effects of Internet culture and technology are changing the environment in which companies operate.

I admire Gray's clarity and the simple power of his well-considered arguments. This is also a very carefully designed book, very mindful of the user experience of its readers. Gray clearly understands and empathizes with the sort of people who need to read this book and what they need to do with the ideas they will find in it. And I hope it won't hurt sales to say that this is a book for the thinking business person.

Dave Gray doesn't have all the answers, of course, but he is struggling with the right questions, and they are the questions that business leaders must also now confront, make sense of, and orient themselves within. The Connected Company sometimes reminds me of the ethos of Tracy Kidder's The Soul of a New Machine. Not only does it capture the sense of urgency that faces organizations today, but also an optimism about the opportunities that lie ahead for the companies that manage to leave the vestiges of the machine age behind and embrace the struggle with complexity that only connected companies can.

Does not meet my needs.
By George Mitchell
This book has several problems that make it a poor choice for someone trying to learn the technologies it purports to teach. In no particular order, they are:

1) The code is presented in top-down order instead of bottom-up. This means that you're working on the presentation layer first, before the data you're going to present, or the methods you need to access that data, exist. The upshot is that you have to get all the way through a chapter before you find out whether you've made a mistake (or mistakes) along the way, and then if the project doesn't work, you have a much harder debugging project than if you had started from the bottom and been able to check your progress frequently along the way.

2) There is very little explanation of what's going on under the covers, or of how the interactions between the different layers works. In a Web application, with HTML and JavaScript happening on the client, C# code on the server, and a database backend, there is a LOT of complexity even in a sample application, and the programmer needs to understand what's happening if they're going to move on and build their own projects. "Create this file here and put this code in it" just can't convey that understanding.

3) In many cases, the actions required to configure the development environment and add resources are described without consideration of logical flow; this means the reader who is trying to code along with the book gets to a step like, "Right-click the Scripts folder and select the Add submenu followed by New Folder. Once the new folder is created, create a new JavaScript file called AuthorFormViewModel.js", and then has to track backward in the text to find out what the folder was supposed to be named. (This is a representative example from the text, there are many others like it.) In some cases, necessary steps are apparently completely missing.

4) When refactoring of existing code files is required, sometimes the necessary code changes are highlighted in the book, but sometimes the reader is presented with the final code without highlights, forcing the reader to compare the new code line-by-line with the existing file, a time-consuming and error-prone activity. Even worse, sometimes the new code is presented as a snippet, with no clear indication of where it fits in the file, or whether it is a replacement of or addition to existing code.

5) The sample code associated with the book (downloadable from github) contains only the final versions of the projects created in the book. With the significant refactoring that happens in each chapter of previous work, this means that there is no way to compare what you have at the end of, say, Chapter 5, with a working version of the project at that stage, and much of the code you put into the project during Chapter 5 has been removed or replaced with completely new code.

The author clearly has a great deal of experience with his subject matter. However, I suspect that in this case, that's part of the problem, because he doesn't appear to have an understanding of what a less-experienced developer will need to know, or in what order they will need to learn it, and the result is that the book is a disorganized mess.

For the record, I've been working in the software business since the early '90s, building network and Internet solutions. I am primarily a tester, but I've done a fair amount of programming along the way, so I'm neither a complete neophyte nor a guru. I *should* be right smack in the target demographic for a book like this, but it's not remotely meeting my needs.

Pretty disappointing.
By Ivan C. Wiegand
I'm very frustrated with this book. After completing chapter 8, the application doesn't work properly. After wasting days trying to troubleshoot, I went in search of the code to download, which I found on a github repo. I cloned the repo and loaded the project in Visual Studio. Turns out the problems I was having are IN THE PROJECT still. That means the tutorials in this book just don't work, in the end and you're left to figure it out, which I gave up on. I learned very little with this book, except how to use KnockoutJS, which is pretty cool but there are free tutorials on how to use it. The author flies through the chapters with little explanation. It seems you're meant to just copy down the code and then it doesn't even work. While I wouldn't say don't buy this book, I'll say don't buy it if you're looking for a beginning to intermediate book on ASP.NET MVC, this book isn't for you. It expects you to know MVC very well.

nay to the naysayers - good book!
By wingnut
This book is not an encyclopedia on the mentioned technologies, but I am very glad for that. I just wanted a book that helped me get some situational awareness on the topics covered in here. The meat of the information is in the working examples. I saw some harsh reviews and feel they are totally undeserved. This book is very useful if wanting to make a MVC 5 app using Bootstrap and Knockout. Kudos to the author.
