One of the BEST books on the subject available

I have been a 1911 aficionado for over 50 years and have accumulated all of the major books and manuals on the subject over the years. I recently purchased Walt Kuleck's excellent book on the 1911 and found it to be simply outstanding. It covers all aspects of the 1911 from history, maintenance, cleaning and lubrication, trouble-shooting, magazines, upgrades, holsters, ammunition, and shooting. Well illustrated throughout with excellent photographs, it is simply an excellent book for anyone interested in the M1911 pistols. Definitely a 5-STAR book.

Truly the Best Book on the 1911

I've bought several books on the 1911 and read articles on it magazines. This book is simply superb for providing an excellent, detailed, history of the development of the 1911 and the various modifications it underwent. It provides excellent detailed photos on how to detail strip it, and how to shoot it. This is simply, in my opinion, the best all-round book on the 1911 pistol and platform.

This is absolutely a great book on the Colt Model 1911. It's jam-packed with useful info on just about every topic you could ask or want to know about these fabulous pistols. Model numbers , ammunition , shooting , holsters, upgrades ,magazines , disassemble , assembly ,sights , maintenance , operation & more ! Even history & selection. Also the small size makes it handy to take to the range. The print is a decent size throughout , a very useful & handy reference manual for the 1911 owner. I highly recommend this book , " THANKS WALTER " 5 STARS !

Out-of-date, poorly written, with a large number of errors.

I was excited for the publication of this book. I have been an off-and-on Linux user since 2008, and seeing a reasonably-priced Dummies book published within the last few weeks that appeared to cover some more advanced aspects of the Linux system made my heart sing with joy.

This book, however, is massively out of date, and appears to have been sloppily edited. I'm only a few chapters in and here are a few of the things that I noticed right out of the box:
> Dulaney (author) recommends purchasing commercial software on your Windows computer in order to partition your hard drive, or using the "QTParted" (long-since renamed to the "KDE Partition Manager"; "GParted" is the one that 99% of distros has come with since 2009) available on the "few distributions available with a live CD" (EVERY single major distribution has a live CD). This is also ludicrous since the installer for EVERY SINGLE MAJOR LINUX DISTRIBUTION contains a partition manager that will set up the partitions for you - and does a good job. In fact, almost every major distribution has had an easy-to-use (not to mention, free) partition manager built into their installers since before 2008 - how out-of-date is this book?
> Dulaney doesn't even mention Linux Mint, the most popular distribution of Linux. Seriously?
> Dulaney says that Ubuntu uses the GNOME desktop, which it hasn't since 2009.
> Dulaney talks about the limited "online support" available for most mainstream distros. One has to assume he's referring to the online documentation pages, since every major distribution has a well-maintained support site (such as askubuntu.com) which he fails to point out to his readers.
> Dulaney doesn't even mention any of the major issues that Linux users will face in 2014, such as setting up a dual-boot with Windows 8 (which is extraordinarily difficult, especially considering the uEFI module), support for hiDPI screens (FHD and above), support for proprietary software (such as flash - necessary for a lot of web browsing, including YouTube), and support for newer hardware that might require proprietary drivers. In fact, he doesn't even include useful information to help one decide between distributions - just a bit about the history of the various companies. Somehow he manages to mention Ubuntu without mentioning Mark Shuttleworth or Canonical - a big no-no in my opinion.
> Dulaney recommends Xandros, a distribution that hasn't had a release since 2006.
> Dulaney claims that you're going to have to decide between GNOME and KDE, despite the fact that both Unity and Cinnamon are more popular than either GNOME or KDE, with MATE, XFCE, LXDE, SoS, and many other desktop environments becoming increasingly popular.

That's just a few of the biggest issues I noticed in the first two chapters alone. There's also a lot of inconsistencies in his writing; sometimes he will do something like recommend using "QTParted", then later in the chapter tell you that you should use "GParted" without acknowledging the discrepancy. Perhaps the rest of the book will change my mind, but from what I've seen so far, this book does not provide a remotely useful guide to Linux in 2014.

If you want to know Linux architecture and history, fine. If you're looking to actually learn how to use it, don't bother. Worst For Dummies book I've ever purchased. Already turned it in as a used book at the local used bookseller for credit.

NOT for Dummies or Beginners !

This is not a book for beginners. Tries to do too much in too little space. No beginner is going to be seeking Linux Certification! Worse, most shoppers would be seeking a book FOR BEGINNERS, and this isn't going to be helpful. It falls into the typical Linux fault of using jargon that new users won't understand, of skipping basics and jumping to sophisticated concepts too soon, and of sloppy editing. Overall, a disappointment.
On the other hand, for someone who has used Linux and tweaked, loaded, installed, uninstalled and done other reading on this operating system, and (successfully) used Wine or a Virtual Machine with their Linux - then, maybe, this would fill in some blanks. But it really leaves many questions unanswered. And, as noted by others, it skips Linux Mint entirely. This is Copyright 2014, and the "For Dummies" brand is harmed when John Wiley & Sons publishers allows this under their brand name.

Focusing on gender formation, the chapters explore the changing constructs of masculinities and femininities in China and Japan from the early modern up to the 1930s. Chapters focus on the dynamism that links the remodeling of traditional arts and media to the political and cultural power relations between China, Japan, and the Western world. About the Author
Doris Croissant is senior professor of East Asian art history at the University of Heidelberg (Germany). She has published on funeral art and portraiture in China, Rinpa painting, the concepts of realism and photography in Japan, and the gender discourse of native aesthetics in Japanese art and popular culture. Catherine Yeh is an Associate Professor at Boston University. Her research interests are presently in twentieth century Chinese entertainment culture, its political implications and its impact on social change. Her recent publications include "Shanghai Love: Courtesan, Intellectuals and Entertainment Culture, 1850-1910" (Seattle, 2005). Joshua S. Mostow is Professor of Asian Studies at The University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada). He is also co-editor, with Norman Bryson and Maribeth Graybill, of "Gender and Power in the Japanese Visual Field" (Hawai i, 2003)."

About the Author
Dr AlHorr is currently the Founding Chairman of the Gulf Organization for Research and Development established in 2009. He has initiated and led the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) – one of the most comprehensive sustainability performance-based rating systems in the world. He also made contributions to the development of Qatari standards of construction (QCS 2010) by preparing the 7th chapter titled (Green Construction). He was also directly involved in preparing the mechanical code for the unified GCC construction standards and he is leading the efforts to develop eco labeling schemes of green products, materials and systems. Dr AlHorr has contributed to various patents that have been filed for registration concerning green and energy-saving products. Dr. Al Horr has published several peer reviewed papers in specialized journals. He also chairs the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Sustainable Built Environment (IJSBE), published by GORD in cooperation with Elsevier. He reviews research articles for several scientific journals, and is a member of several specialized associations and organizations. Before joining GORD, Dr. Al Horr worked for Barwa Real Estate Group in 2006 where he undertook the positions of President of Strategy and Investment, Deputy CEO for Operations and the Advisor for Chairman. During his tenure, he was heavily involved in strategic projects on the corporate level and was directly supervised various strategic social initiatives. Dr. AlHorr assumed several tasks and responsibilities at Qatar University (QU), between 1990 – 2006, varying from being a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department, to acting as the university’s Vice President for Research. Throughout his working years at the University, Dr AlHorr was effectively involved in the institution’s development, especially the QU Reform Project, while offering a range of technical research, training and consultations to the industrial sector. In recognition of his vision and the initiatives, Dr AlHorr has received several awards including ‘Excellence for Outstanding Social Contribution’ in London (2009); ‘Emerging CEO’ in Dubai (2010); and the “Environment & Sustainability Award” in Qatar (2011). Dr AlHorr graduated in 1989 from Qatar University’s Faculty of Engineering. He obtained his MSc degree in 1996 from George Washington University in the US, followed by his PhD in Materials Engineering from UMIST in the UK in 2000.

At $1,498.91 no star should be given. This is an INSULT to assume that "you the purchaser" would be willing to buy this book for $1,498.91. Fact... I could go to an average State University and take one undergraduate class for$1,498.91. If I attended a Community College I could attend a semester for $1,498.91. I hope that I can INSULT the author and publisher as they have INSULTED the purchasing consumer of information.

Glickman is nothing if not practical, as his credentials suggest. The editor and publisher of Green Living, an environmental journal, and author of The Mindful Money Guide argues that sensation-based vipassana meditation as taught by revered Indian master S.N. Goenka is the most effective meditation method. Twenty years of meditation appear to have brought Glickman useful clarity: his meditation instructions will help beginners, his unpacking of the idea of Buddhist detachment is insightful and his correlation of new brain research results with ancient Buddhist wisdom is fresh and persuasive. When he moves beyond meditation and the insights of the four noble truths about reality, however, he overreaches. He discusses ethics, karma, nirvana as a nod to the whole complex way of seeing and being that Buddhism offers, yet here seems to be much more un-Buddhistically theoretical. His connections can be hard to grasp: Darwin's consonance with Buddhism is an intriguing idea that is under-explained, and the topic of addiction to pleasure is similarly underdeveloped. The biggest disappointment in the book, though, is the editing. Someone should have corrected the misspelling of Henepola Gunaratana's name in the bibliography as well as a dozen other distracting mistakes in text ("snacked very discretely," "severals times," "compliment and reinforce"). The book's strength is Glickman's nitty-gritty appreciation of the somatic experience of reality. The Buddha knew that suffering hurt. Glickman does well to emphasize the "mindbody" as the vehicle we humans have to drive to nirvana.

About the Author
Marshall Glickman began meditating in 1982. He has worked as a financial consultant, writer and is the editor and publisher of the environmental journal Green Living. He is the author of The Mindful Money Guide and his articles have appeared in many publications including The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, and The Chicago Tribune. He lives in Williamsville, Vermont with his wife and two daughters.

Step by step Vipassana (Goenka) meditation !

I went to a Vipassana ( Goenka) retreat 3 years ago but the 4th day my husband and I gave up! To hard for our health! My husband is 68 and I am 57 years. I am very thin and have some back problems . I really think the retreats are designed for very healthy people . Food is scarce , many hours sitting with your back straight....
I was very sad not to have the possibility of learning the complete Vipassana meditation method. I haver read the few books I could find about Vipassana (compared with many many books about other types of meditation ), but none of them explained what is most important and only taught in the (Goenka) Vipassana retreats: complete, clear and detailed instructions. Finally I found this wonderful book and I really thank Mr Glickman for giving my husband and me and hope many other people too the opportunity to learn deeply the Vipassana meditation specially when going to a retreat is not possible.
The book is also rich in explanations on how to work with the difficulties of human mind in a very didactic way.
I hope this book could have a bigger display and can be obtained as a kindle book too so that many people can know about it and buy it. I searched before in amazon and could not find it before.

First rate introduction to Vipassana Meditation and Buddhist thought

Author Marshall Glickmn details the difficulties and discomforts (even suffering a
'traditional' clubbing from a Zen Master in the process) during the decades he spent
trying different Buddhist meditative techniques, looking for the most effective
method to transcend his ego. His excellent book about Vipassana Meditation,
"Beyond the Breath", (no clubbing in that technique) was the result of his search.
Glickman thinks Vipassana is likely closest to the style of meditation practiced
by the Buddha himself. The author takes us on a very intellectually accessable
tour of Buddhist and related Western philosophical thought, including showing how
modern science supports what the Buddha taught about people and the Universe
thousands of years ago. Buddha was searching for the source of human suffering and
a way to find relief from it. Glickman tells us what answers Buddha found and how
Vipassana Meditation can have a relieving effect on our own sufferings today.
"Beyond the Breath" is one of those books you regret having to put down.
I think you will very much enjoy reading it, and through it meeting a very erudite
and likable author.
Now that I have read his book, I have no excuse for not committing to practicing
the technique, though it may even take a little Zen clubbing to get me going.
From my reading, Marshall Glickman is very understanding about such very human
problems and his book includes lots of helpful advice about getting started.

i've purchased this book at least 15 times in my life to give it away. You dont have to be Buddhist to read or benefit from the teachings and practice; most people who i gave it to were not.
If you want to understand the science behind meditation, if you want to enliven your practice, if you just want a little help with the day to day upsets in life and manage your emotions...READ THIS BOOK.

This is Larkin Rose's fifth novel. In this book, she introduces the reader to fashion designer Eve Harris, a driven workaholic at the top of the fashion ladder with no time for dating and romance. She gets physical relief using a British phone sex operator named Lexi.

Also introduced is Jodi Connelly, a very successful paid escort who was once a phone sex operator but has pared her phone sex client list down to a special three, one of whom is Eve.

Both women are obsessed with the other without ever having met in person and neither has any interest in meeting in person because they are certain they will be disappointed with reality. The chances of meeting are slim to none because Eve lives in New York City and Jody lives in London. Little do they know that they would, indeed, meet. Neither could possibly foretell the cataclysmic effects their meeting will have on their carefully controlled lives.

Rose has written a book that no reader will be able to easily put down. This is a tightly woven story so well written that there's not single misstep. From start to finish, the story moves quickly forward. In the hands of a lesser writer, this story could very well have become trite. Larkin's sure hand makes this a compelling story of two women looking for the same thing.

There is one caveat, though. The intimate meetings between Eve and Jody are explicit. If you prefer the details of sexual meetings to be hinted at rather then drawn in vivid detail, this is not the book for you.

Ridiculous... but fun

So this is the kind of book you don’t want to get caught reading.

Random stranger on BART: “Oh, that book looks fun, what’s it about?”

Me: “Um… it’s a romance... about a woman in love with a phone sex operator.”

No. Seriously… No. I’m not explaining that to anybody. It’s like a Ho-Ho. Those damn things are delicious. But you don’t want anyone to see you eat it.

So this book was fun. I think it’s the fluffiest book I’ve ever read, but it’s still fun. Nothing more.

Eve Harris is a fashion designer. She is at the top of her game and leads a successful life. She even has her own phone sex operator named Lexi for whenever she feels the need for sex. Lexi knows Eve's every last sexual need. Eve has no need to clutter up her life with a real live relationship. Jodi Connelly is a ladies escort, she also has a couple of phone sex clients left over from her previous job. Eve is the one she feels she has a connection with though. When Eve comes to London for fashion week, Jodi and Eve meet. Eve has no idea that Jodi is also Lexi, but Jodi knows who Eve is and the two women begin a week of hot sex with each other. What will happen when Eve finds out that her hot stud and Lexi are one and the same person?
A thoroughly enjoyable hot and steamy afternoon's read. If you want a story and you want it hot and sexy, look no further, this is the one.
