This volume reviews the microtextural literature of the last twenty-five years since the publication of Sand Grain Surface Texures by D.H. Krinsley and J. Doornkamp, in 1973, which inaugurated the use of the SEM in sedimentology. For over four decades, the SEM has proved itself to be the instrument of choice in the analysis of microstructures, whether they be mineral collages or intergrowths, whole grain or partial grain microfeatures including microtextures, dissolution characteristics and/or precipitates-coatings of various thicknesses and compositions. Its high resolution stereo imagery, coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry, provides a level of compositional analysis that far exceeds the traditional light microscope. With magnifications from 25 to 100,000X, virtually the surface of any molecular structure can be seen and studied from microphotographs or electronic imagery together with printouts from an interlinked energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Offering an expanded list of microtextures, new interpretations of them and an assessment of how they may be used to discriminate sedimentary environments, this volume builds on the original "Atlas" and the work of practitioners worldwide. Including engineering tests designed to reproduce "glacial grains" under controlled conditions in the laboratory, new information on microtextures of heavy minerals, applications in the earth, forensic, archaeologic, and nutrition sciences, together with the use of the secondary and CL modes of the SEM, this book is a state-of-the-art presentation of where sand grain microfeature analysis lies at present and where it intends to go in the future.

Outstanding book - quality of book and contents excellent

I consider this an excellent book. The quality of its construction and of its contents are both outstanding.

The book was written for those who need to know about SEM analysis of surface textures of sand grains and I am not one of those. So my opinions are from a different point of view than the books intended audience. I deal with microscopic analysis of the surface textures of sand grains and the upper limits of what is illustrated in this book is about the lower limits of what I can see. However, one of the reasons I deal with surface textures is to help in determin the origin and transport history of sand grains and for this purpose the organization of the book is excellent. The photographs are clear, the vocubulary explained and there are ample expamples of the various surface features discussed. If you want to know what a particular surface texture looks like, that is in front part of the book. If you want to know what surface textures are found on rocks of a particular orign, that is in the back part of the book.. This two fold organization makes the book doubly useful.

I expect it to become one of the most valuable books in my library.

This book is easy to understand and divided into 4 accessible sections, from the benefits of Nest Home System to the products that are available. O'Driscoll is very knowledgable in this subject area, and now I'm feeling more assured about setting up my own smart home.

Grade 7-10-A critical look at Jackson that traces his rise to military and political power and emphasizes his willingness to use force and domination to achieve his goals. Meltzer discusses his subject's presidency in some detail, describing his policies and their effects on the country. However, he fails to convey why the man has been so well regarded by historians and why he was important to the building of our nation. While Jackson's Indian removal policy and protection of slavery cannot and should not be defended, and his dismantling of the Bank of the United States was ill advised, he also had a positive impact on the country. Meltzer does not give him enough credit for his resolute defense of the Union during the nullification crisis, and fails to mention how his nationalism and his popularity with the average Americans who were just starting to take part in the political process was an important part in the building of a more cohesive country. As usual, Meltzer writes well, and this book is interesting and easy to understand. Well-chosen black-and-white illustrations, maps, and drawings add to the text.

Gr. 8-12. Meltzer's biographies always teach us as much about the history of the period as they do about his subject. His latest book is no exception. Readers will emerge with a multifaceted picture of Andrew Jackson--a wily land speculator but poor businessman, a politician who fought to preserve the Union but subverted the law when convenient, a gambler who loved horse racing, a doting husband, and a proponent of slavery. They will also come away with the understanding that Jackson was very much a product of his time and that he was willing to represent the people against the "rapacious moneyed aristocracy" as long as it suited his interests. Thoroughly covered are Jackson's role in and the conditions that led to such historic events as the Indian removal and the abolitionist movement, with Meltzer selecting and presenting all his information in a manner that is thoughtful, provocative, and very readable. Student researchers will appreciate Meltzer's source notes as well as his suggestions of other topics to explore. Chris Sherman

A scathing portrayal of the man who presided over an era when slavery became more deeply entrenched, Native-Americans were hounded from their eastern homelands, and US citizens flooded Texas in anticipation of its annexation. The dueling pistols featured on the jacket, along with the chapter headings, underline Meltzer's theme: the feisty orphan, quick to defend his honor against any offense, matured to become an autocrat who won power via a charismatic personality and such happenstance as being proclaimed hero of the Battle of New Orleans through no particular merit. As he did in Columbus (1990) and Thomas Jefferson (1991), Meltzer points out the ongoing significance of events and builds his central portrait with a wealth of vivid, concrete detail; but though he also sees slaveholder and Indian- fighter Jackson as a product of his times, he has virtually no sympathy for him: from appointing Roger Taney (of Dred Scott notoriety) to the Supreme Court to his role in the demise of the Second Bank of the United States, Meltzer depicts Jackson as a propagandist who posed as the workingman's friend while consistently, and often illegally, undermining his interests. No specific citations for quotes, but the author provides an excellent essay on his sources and a good selection of maps and period art, posters, etc. (though some of the cartoons are too small and dark to read). Jackson soon organized what became the modern Democratic Party to become President, vigorously ruled as President, and wiped out the Federal debt. Synthesizing conflicting perspectives on this charismatic populist leader, this well-written book also examines promotion of slavery, the forced relocation of Indians against a Supreme Court decision, and expansionist policies. Have to say I love this book

Have to say I love this book. The pedantic amongst you may find yourselves grinding teeth excessively due to grammar and spelling errors, but if you take the time to consider that Jisse has done the whole thing himself from writing to publishing, I think he should be afforded some slack. So, appropriate amount cap tipping to Jisse aside, what you have here is an excellent resource enanabling the reader enough knowledge and insight into Joomla plugin development to become quite dangerous. Plugins are the turbo system of Joomla and offer site builders an excellent way to stand out and differentiate yourself from the mundane; this book offers you the 'Haynes Manual' to dissmantle, rebuild and fine tune this system.

Great book, clear explanations

I was looking for a book on Joomla plugins that would give me more than just the basics, and more than I could find by using Google and skulking the forums. When I opened this book for the first time, I saw a clear and well laid out explanation for the problem I was currently working on, how to extend a plugin parameters form with my own custom field. This book does cover the basics, but it also gives good information on advanced topics, and also clearly explains the reasoning behind a lot of why Joomla is laid out the way it is. This is great future-proofing for my own code. I'm glad I found out about this book on the joomlabe.at podcast, and I'm glad I picked it up. 5.5 stars.

I've read many programming books on Joomla and this one by far takes a clear approach that pays off well: Focus on one thing and do it really well. Plugins are a huge part of Joomla yet many times authors focus on components as modules and don't spend enough time going deep into things like plugins.

After reading this book I found myself writing 3 Smart Search modules for a client. Having this book's content fresh in my mind it was much easier to deliver that code on time. Many regards to the Jisse for writing this!
