Good as a summary

This book is a nice summary of what is happening in the analytics world as we speak of today. Author is clear at what it says and the pace of reading is quite good.

However, if you want to know deep about the stuff, this book will not be there for you. All you get is a very high-level architecture of the big data apps and no more.

All in all, it was nice to read this actually, for me!

Hashiguchi studied the conformal change of Finsler metrics. In 2008, S. Abed introduced the β-conformal change, thus generalizing the conformal, Randers and generalized Randers changes. In this work, we introduce a more general change of Finsler metrics, which is referred to as a generalized β-conformal change. This change combines both β-change and conformal change, in a general setting, generalizing the most important changes existing in the literature. The geometric consequences of such change are investigated. Various special Finsler spaces are studied under this change. This book is highly recommended to both postgraduate students and researchers in geometry and its applications, especially in physics.

Unlike other books, I see the hand of a teacher here, starting from the beginning and guiding you through it, all the while encouraging you and making the book readable, light and even pleasant on the very serious subject of the stock market. This is my personal opinion.

Although a person's ability to learn a second language declines continuously with age, recent research summarized in this survey suggests that adults are more capable of second-language acquisition than most people assume. In an academic treatise that will appeal primarily to theorists, linguists, psychologists and educators, the authors, both professors of psychology (Bialystok at England's York University, Hakuta at Stanford), stress that learning a second language fosters new ways of organizing concepts and of thinking. Language proficiency, they note, defies easy explanation, since research has found no systematic correlation among personality, motivation, cognitive style, intelligence and the ability to learn a second language. They conclude with suggestions on ways to make language teaching culturally sensitive and responsive to a student's specific situation.

Ellen Bialystok and Kenji Hakuta view second-language acquisition as one way of coming to grips with the fundamental nature of language, mind, and brain. Although they have conducted some of the key research in the area of second-language acquisition, they also work more broadly in the fields of cognitive and language development as well as in education policy, and thus they are ideally suited to address this issue. Using an array of vivid illustrations, lively anecdotes, and fascinating research examples, they show how five elements - brain, language, mind, self, and culture - make up the complex ecology of language learning. The book considers vital questions: Is the brain "hard-wired" for language learning? "In Other Words" Stanford language researchers Bialystok and Hakuta provide a detailed overview of current research in primary and second language learning. Chapters focusing on the relevance of brain, mind, self, and culture in language learning and the implications of each for acquiring a second language are supported by critical evaluations of research and theory. This is a smorgassbord of tasty ideas for anyone interested in linguistics, language, and the human mind. As a graduate student in Education, I appreciated the breadth of research and ideas represented in only 219 pages. A terrific overview of issues in the academic arena of language and literacy.

a good review of the research--if you can understand it

Just two criticisms:

1. The authors are not always objective. They belittle writings which other people might find valuable.

A student of the Japanese language might profit from Ueda's list of 16 ways to avoid saying no. In 1954, McCarthy arrived at statistics regarding how many words are known by the average child at each age. A student learning a foreign vocabulary might be motivated by reading these statistics and competing with children of a particular age. Both of these writings are denounced by Bialystok & Hakuta.

2. Most of the sentences are complex and abstract:

"It is our opinion that an integrated view that assembles components from various disparate sources in both theory and practice, which annotates those sourses with an analysis of their relevant and irrelevant features and then attempts to piece them together in a complex pattern, is precisely what practitioners need in order to allow them the freedom to interpret those patterns for their own purposes and from their own point of view."

Good book for ESL teachers

In Other Words: The Science and Psychology of Second Language Acquisition was written by Ellen Bialystok and Kenji Hakuta and published by Basic Books in 1994. The book provides a complete theoretical review on the development of second language learning and teaching. The authors discuss why it is easier for some and more difficult for others to learn another language. They organize the book based on five factors that they consider will make up the frame of second-language learning. These factors are language, brain, mind, self, and culture and are innate in those learning a second language. The authors explain how experiences may differ for every one and that the significance of a second language may depend on who is acquiring/learning the second language and what second language is being learned. The author's closing arguments are very optimistic for those who are in the process of learning a second language and those who have failed in the past and wish to give learning a second language another try. In page 206 of their book, Bialystok and Hakuta state, "There are no absolute barriers to second-language acquisition", thus, they encourage educators to consider using a variety of teaching technique to fulfill the needs and desires of the learners because no single correct approach is sufficient by itself to achieve language proficiency. The book covers a lot of material in a small space, is well written, interesting - and even entertaining. It provides a needed background for beginning language teachers and tutors at all levels.

Criticisms

It focuses too narrowly on oral/aural learning. It pays lip service to learning to read/write in a phonemic language but has nothing to say about ideographic languages (pictographic and logographic).

There is a major deficiency in its oral/aural section - it only touches on poetry and song - and tonal languages. It does not say anything about people with various kinds of hearing deficiencies such as the inability to hear some tones within the normal hearing range.

In summary, I recommend the book be considered for background reading in education courses directed to language teachers and teaching, specially to those teacher who have second-language learners in their classrooms.

Worth saving your money to just get the loose leaf version. The binder was busted up and some pages were torn at their holes. I cut the torn pages, re-punched the holes, and put the book in a new binder. In the end, I saved a lot and the book did the job well enough.

Entertaining

If I could sum this book into a single word, it would be "wow." The book is a short and easy read, separated into chapters that correspond to different diary entries. Entries range from ghost stories to sordid encounters with married servicemen, and everything in between. Some of the material is explicit to say the least, so you probably won't be reading this as a bedtime story to your kids. I'm not a fan of reading erotica, but Gibson found a way to make the stories funny and entertaining. Be prepared, once you start reading this book, you won't want to put it down until the end.

There are little words to describe the rarity of a book like this. It's not your "typical" story of someone's life. Fictional or not, the character pokes fun at his life occurrences and you can't help but laugh at every segment that he chooses to share. Very easy read. Mature readers only, PLEASE. Don't be surprised if you find yourself peeing your pants from all the laughter!

Below is my review for the paperback BUT I downloaded this one to my kindle only to find it has way more chapters! I love how the author jokes about the typos. Yes, there are a few, however it doesn't make the book un readable. It's still disgusting as ever and my friends and I can't stop laughing at these stories.

Got my copy in the mail yesterday and have already finished it!

5 stars because this book is sexually explicit and raunchy. Brian Gibson did a number on this book. Here are my favorite highlights:

First off, who pissed him off in the prologue???!!!

"I Gave A Soldier Fireworks on July Fouth": I DIE!! I love how he desribes getting drunker and drunker and then convincing a soldier to come out of the closet. I had no idea alcohol could do such a thing! The way he descirbes this intimate rendevouz will have you pee your pants and kill over with laughter!

"Giving Birth To Possums": A Dead possum having babies and he and his sister deliver live baby possums while its mother is dead. Funny and hilarious, and the language and the way he describes the whole scene is nasty. I don't want to post clips here for language purposes, but you have to read it. Funny stuff.

"Sex With a Married Soldier" Had me dying of laughter. Brian Gibson descibes the worst sex he ever had with a married soldier, from meeting him on the internet, to the guy coming over to his house, to the guy performing terrible in bed. Again, I wish I could explain more here, but I want to keep it clean. This chapter is TOOOOO funny.

The beginning of the book is a girl finding a diary in her new house and the body of the book is the diary she reads. I wish he explained somewhere who wrote the diary, or what the prologue is or what the ending is. If you read the book cover to cover, you'll laugh and also wonder what in the world what he was thinking, but I suppose he leaves it up to your imagination as a lot of questions you might ask do remain unanswered.

There is a chapter called "How To Catch Your Man Cheating" which I suggest you read because it just might scare you.

All-in-all, I'm just glad that cheating men are exposed for what they really are in this book. I've read several books about one-night stand and the funny stories, but this is the first one that's about gay sex and military. I give this guy props for stepping into a touchy subject. Is he sure it is fiction?

MORE PLEASE. I NEED A SEQUEL.

Sympathetic psychological portrait

Books about Napoleon seem to fall in two categories : the hate-him biographers, like Paul Johnson, who depict him as a demon who can do no good, or the admirers, like all French authors on Napoleon I have seen, who can say no bad about him.

Cronin's book is also very kind to Napoleon : for instance when he is crowned emperor of France, we are told that Napoleon did not really seek this title, but that it was his friends who thought it would be a splendid idea. I cannot imagine that someone as ambitious as Napoleon would just sit back and wait for his friends to have such a good idea. Furthermore we are told Napoleon's wars were defensive only. Whilst I have sympathy for Cronins argument that all Europe's old regime monarchs ganged up against France, I still think Napoleon was a person who tended to settle differences on the battlefield rather than at the negotiating table.

Still, as long as one bears this bias in mind, this is a highly enjoyable psychological portrait because it succeeds very well in showing how Napoleon changed during his life. For instance, the description of his relationship with his wife Josephine is an eye-opener because it shows Napoleon in such a different light from his battlefield image : he stayed with her for a long time despite knowing she betrayed him repeatedly.

There is relatively little in this book about specific battles, except to demonstrate how creative Napoleon was in military strategy and tactics (for instance you may read more in this book about Napoleon's favourite foods or his daytime routines). The battle at Waterloo merits only 3 pages (Napoleon was less than inspired that day).

This book is not for those interested in military history, but I recommend it for those who want to understand a man who managed to terrorise the established monarchs, czars and emperors of Europe for many years and who left a more lasting legacy than his victors : from his Code Civil, which is still the basis to civil law in a number of European countries, to the tree-lined French routes nationales ( so his troups could march in the shadow). In particular I would recommend it to those who have purchased Paul Johnson's book about Napoleon.

Even a Napoleon Hater will learn to appreciate Napoleon...

This book paints an incredibly accurate account of Napoleon's life from a close and intimate angle. Whilst it is obvious the author is no Napoleon-hater, he does not make up anecdotes to manipulate the reader (as many Napoleon-haters do in their biographies).
However, this book is no good for people who are interested in the military aspects of Napoleon. This book is more concentrated on the personal side of Napoleon. Although it mentions basic battle plans and overall strategy, that is not the purpose of the book. If you are truly interested in his army, I suggest you read "Napoleon and his Marshalls" and the Greenwood Military volume on The Napoleonic Wars.

The Definitive Biography of Napoleon

Over the years Napoleon's name has been blackened by many apocryphal writers of biography. They have tried to paint Napoleon as the 'Corsican Orge' , their favourite term for the Frenchman. Just as Tudor historians tarnished Richard III so was Napoleon's image destroyed by pro-Bourbon writers , who were essentially pro-British. Vincent Cronin has most effectively countered those accusations against the French Emperor. He has revealed a man with a great depth of feeling and knowledge, a man who was tragically governed by circumstances all his life and thus had to take certain actions which have been construed by pro British writers as being imperialistic. Cronin doesn't mince his words about the Napoleon versus Britain issue. He methodically and analytically shows that it was the British who broke the Treaty of Amiens in 1803 by seizing French merchantmen. He explains quite correctly that the British were not doing it for any humane reasons but because they simply feared Napoleon's France as being a shining example to all those who wanted to leave the 'old order' behind. More so the British feared that a powerful France would be a source of help and inspiration to those who were trying to overthrow the British occupation of their homelands. Namely , Wolf Tone of Ireland in 1798 and Tipu Sultan of Mysore(in India) in 1799 tried to get French aid to defeat the imperialistic British who didn't want a strong France to interfere in their bid for world conquest. After Napoleon's defeat the British then tried to put the image of the world conqueror on Napoleon! All of this and more Cronin clarifies in his brilliantly written work. He even points out memoirs which were written principally to win favour with Bourbons between 1815 and 1830. All in all, this book is very objective and presents revolutionary France as she really was and not the way British tried to portray her. Vincent Cronin has painted a man who was more familiar with pens, letters and laws then with guns ,artillery and cavalry. His Civil Code has survived to this day .His laws have effected Civil Codes as far as South America. It is my opinion that this is 'the definitive' biography of Napoleon. A must for all Revolutionary France readers and historians.
