To ensure realism, any substantive dependence on timers is avoided. A wide variety of homebrew and commercial train-sensors is covered, with instructions on DIY alternatives ranging from very simple to ultimate performance. Based on the use of the excellent scale signals that are on the market, the text applies to any combination of DIY and commercial sensor and control hardware. Multiple-block signaling with turnouts, “tumble-down”, and cross-tracks are discussed in detail. The use of the same sensors for automatic track (train or “cab”) control is described for turnaround loops and wyes, for the prevention of following- and opposing-train collisions, and for non-derailing at improperly positioned turnouts. Also covered is the application of these concepts in a Digital Command Control context. DIY Advanced Model Railroad Signaling Electronics assumes a very modest knowledge of electronics, or alternatively, the ability to interpret a schematic diagram and solder simple, highly economical components on a hobbyist’s circuit board. Specific electronic board layouts have been designed for the most important circuits, and commercial sources for the boards – as well as all other components – are provided. The book includes 97 figures and diagrams, and a comprehensive outline of contents.

About the Author
J. Richard (Dick) Kerr holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and is a retired infrared, laser, and avionics systems engineer. He has authored over 60 scientific and engineering papers, and has been granted 10 patents. During his career he has been a professor, Graduate School president, engineering manager, and entrepreneur. Starting with an early childhood interest in model railroading, Dick has been fascinated with the idea of providing truly realistic, automatic signal operation that far exceeds the capabilities of commercially available toy train and scale model commercial units. Having (partially) retired, he has spent much of his time fleshing out these ideas in great detail, including testing on his own model train layouts. Many years have passed since the first motivation for these concepts, and he hopes that their final exposition will bring pleasure to- and stimulate the creativity of – others in this challenging and timeless hobby.

my wife bought me this book, its not for the beginner, you will need to have some electronics experience in how to read a multi meter and have some experience in constructing kits or similar.

Fantstic *Modern* Astrolabe Book

First, if you're interested at all in astrolabes, this is the single best, most informative, most comprehensive book I've found. It's clear, concise and well illustrated. I'm very tempted to use the chapter on stereographic projections in my GIS classes.

It doesn't have many illustrations of historic instruments, but that's not it's focus. You can find those in the Time Museum or Western Astrolabes book and get more nuts and bolts info about the production process from Scientific Instruments of Elizabethan England. But for creating and using an astrolabe, you can't find a better reference- UNLESS you really want to use period processes. He doesn't even try to show how it was done, dismissing it with "Readers interested in the mathematical approach used in the Middle Ages are referred to Thomson for a thorough treatment"- that would be the translation of de Plana Spera. As I keep telling my daughter, life gets boring if you don't have anything to long for. I'll start saving the (argh!) $150 for that next.

The contents (with the exception of using trig instead of geometry to create the layout) are exceptional. The physical book is less so. I plan on using this heavily and I don't think it's going to hold up. The paperback cover is glued to the front and back pages to try to give it some stability, but the glue is already losing its hold. The pages themselves are glued in rather than bound. I know there wasn't a real choice in that, but it's a thick book and it's not going to hold up well- think of the Calvin and Hobbes collectors' editions. The paper is already yellowing and I just got it last week. I *know* these choices had to be made to keep the cost of the book down to something that wouldn't make people scream, but I'm going to take it to Kinkos and have it drilled so I can capture it inside a 3 ring binder. I'm not going to risk losing any of the pages. It has enough white space to make that feasible and still have room left over for notes.

An Extraordinary, in Depth Look at One of the Earliest Scientific Wonders

I saw my first astrolabe in a museum and was absolutely blown away. The sheer wonder of something that mapped the heavens in one dimension, essentially the first portable (analog) computer, overwhelmed me. It was used to tell time, cast horoscopes, predict astronomical events, and survey. In short, it was an instrument from ages when science, metaphysics and art were much more closely aligned. I spent time googling the subject, ran across Mr. Morrison's book and went the extra mile and bought the sturdier hardcover, and don't regret it. The book describes the machine's origins from the astronomer/astrologers of Classical Greece to the construction and sophisticated innovations by their Moslem intellectual heirs to the artistic constructions of late Renaissance Europe. No sage, scholar, or magician of merit would be found without an astrolabe of his own - even if it was just a paper version. The book goes into the nitty gritty of astrolabe math, construction, operations, and all known astrolabe variations. It also goes into a little detail on astrolabe computer programs and programming. There are some minor print errors, but if you email Mr. Morrison he'll gladly send you a .pdf of corrected pages. Overalll this is a spectacular book for anyone fascinated by history, science, and astronomy.

A Missed Opportunity to Broker Peace

When interpretations of scientific evidence differ radically and acrimoniously, you can be certain that the interest of at least one of the parties is not a better understanding of what makes things tick in the natural world. Whether the topic is the heliocentric solar system, descent with modification, or rapid climate change, rarely are the scientific facts themselves a matter of contention. Edmond Mathez' book is a case in point.

The true value in Mathez' book is his treatment of the carbon cycle and the complexity of the interrelationships between the atmosphere, the lithosphere, the biosphere, the hydrosphere, and the cryosphere. Mathez' packaging of these topics for the scientifically literate reader, complete with illustrations, is masterful. Once Mathez equips us with the necessary vocabulary and the conceptual framework, he takes us back into deep geologic time to experience "climates past." Here we learn how carbon cycle disequilibria have created millennia of glacial and interglacial cycles, and we learn where we are in the present interglacial. And he shows the complexities and limitations of the climate models designed to forecast our destiny.

Mathez describes the three types of irregularities in the Earth's orbit which interact to create Milankovitch cycles, which explain much of the naturally-occurring cyclicality in Earth's' historic climate. He also describes the naturally-occurring accelerators, principally the polar albedo effect and water vapor, as well as the climate system's balancing factors.

One of the most startling of the historic cycles is the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), some 55 million years ago, which the author states "is analogous to resent-day climate change." During the Paleocene, climate had been slowly warming, but then a sudden, enormous mass of carbon flooded the ocean and atmosphere. During the PETM, 1,500 to 4,500 gigatons (billion metric tons) of carbon entered the Earth's climate system. This influx of carbon increased the Earth's temperature by 9 to 16 degrees Fahrenheit, about the amount of carbon and temperature we'd expect at current levels of anthropogenic carbon production. Another startling precedent was the Younger Dryas, only about 12,900 years ago, which in the space of only 1,300 years increased the Earth's temperature some 13 degrees Fahrenheit. The Younger Dryas warming period does not appear, however, to have been caused by an increase in carbon, but to a sudden decrease in the salinity of the oceans.

The author shows that in the last 100 thousand years there have been 23 naturally-occurring warm periods, the last of them causing the current increases in atmospheric and hydrospheric temperatures which account for the retreating glaciers. It is clear that with humans introducing some 36 gigatons of carbon dioxide annually, the current rate of naturally-occurring warming can only accelerate.

Edmond Mathez, provides all of this information, and more, yet he fails to draw the key conclusion which could have easily brokered a peace between partisans in the climate debate. Why doesn't he state unequivocally that there are both natural and anthropogenic causes to the current interglacial warming period and that climate research should focus on quantifying the percentages of each? Of course it makes sense for humans to reduce carbon emissions, but won't the impact of any reductions depend on the relative impact of our emissions? That is a question that Mathez curiously leaves unanswered.

Well-written

This book was required for my grad school class. However, it's an easy read that I've been able to adapt to my high school classroom too. Each chapter has important vocabulary and leading questions in the back of the book. This makes you focus very specifically.
