The Life and Times of a Grotesque kind of "family"
By Kali
This is one of the most grotesquely fascinating books I have ever read in my life. It is about a grotesque man, Fred West and his equally grotesque wife Rosemary West, two serial killers born and bred in the UK.
Fred and Rosemary West will long be remembered for their systematic abuse (and murder) of their own children (and others) and how, for many years they evaded being discovered because of the indifferent society they lived in.
Gordon Burn takes his readers into a modern day Heart of Darkness in which there is no happy ending, only survivors who will never be the same again.
This is not an easy book to read, it starts in a peculiar way, far removed from the West family themselves, in a way it is quite detached from Fred and Rosemary, and I think the author did this on purpose.

Instead the book looks at the lives of people who at first seem to have nothing to do with the storyline, but then the threads are carefully drawn in, showing the connections to Fred and Rosemary West and how evil can spread its tentacles in and too the most unlikely of places.
This is a horror story that turns your stomach because it is a true horror story, of how a man and a woman could get away with cold blooded and totally calculated murder for years.
This book is not for the faint hearted or squeamish; it is brutal, and explicit in its search for truth and understanding. It is well written, savagely analytical and totally mesmerising from beginning to end. It is a book that I can recommend but only if you have the stomach to read it.

Excellent account
By Katrina Csanadi
If you are at all interested in the appalling crimes of Fred and Rosemary West, this is a must have for your library. Books about Fred and Rose are rare (I have only counted 6 titles). Others include: "Fred and Rose", "She Must Have Known", "The Corpse Garden", and "Out of the Shadows". "Happy Like Murderers" gives a rich look into the lives of these sick individuals.

Interesting and different
By Emmysmom
This book is the first true crime I've read in ages that took a different approach to story-telling. It's unusual, told almost colloquially as if someone were verbally recounting it. I noticed the repetition that someone else in a review below complained about, and I was intially taken aback by it, but now I believe it was purposeful and effective, adding to the impression that someone's telling the story to you. If a person recounts a long complicated story, it's inevitable that portions will be repeated - that's the impression I got.

I love the way it familiarizes the reader in detail with the lives of others in the Wests' orbit - it makes the whole story three dimensional, and thus far more moving.

Theodor W. Adorno goes beyond conventional thematic analysis to gain a more complete understanding of Mahler's music through his character, his social and philosophical background, and his moment in musical history. Adorno examines the composer's works as a continuous and unified development that began with his childhood response to the marches and folk tunes of his native Bohemia.

Since its appearance in 1960 in German, Mahler has established itself as a classic of musical interpretation. Now available in English, the work is presented here in a translation that captures the stylistic brilliance of the original.

Theodor W. Adorno (1903-69), one of the foremost members of the Frankfurt school of critical theory, studied with Alban Berg in Vienna during the late twenties, and was later the director of the Institute of Social Research at the University of Frankfurt from 1956 until his death. provocative and stimulating analysis of Mahler's music
By Alan Mason
The subject of this classic of musical analysis is the complicated phenomenon of Mahler's music and our response to it. The treatment is philosophical/psychological/analytic and the abstractness and complexity of the prose is typical of what one would find in a doctoral thesis, except that it is beautifully written (and Jephcott's translation is itself a work of art).
To introduce the subject let me start with an experience of my own, which is no doubt typical. My introduction to Mahler's music was through the Ninth and Tenth symphonies, which is like starting a mountain climb already at the top of the mountain. I was 22 and naturally quite bowled over. Imagine my chagrin then at hearing the Fourth for the first time -- what is this Haydnesque genre piece that ends with a naive song? How could it have been written by the same composer? As always, though, Mahler's music works on one's subconscious and a few days later I felt compelled to listen again, and what a revelation this was! The first movement, in particular, is absolutely extraordinary. It starts with a curious repeated figure, four flutes in unison playing fifths plus a grace note, accompanied by bells; this leads directly into the deceptively classical-sounding main theme and reappears throughout the first movement (and also in the last) as a kind of magic talisman with multiple meanings. The main theme is followed by a striking sunny interlude in A, with bases rocking pizzicato in fifths, a scurrying violin figure, and violas trilling like insects singing in a meadow. I had the impression of an adult and child walking through a field on a summer day. There's a brief change to the minor, then some high sustained notes in the flutes. These are repeated more emphatically by high clarinets, heralding an ominous change, as if the bucolic scene were being overrun by scudding clouds. Things are not what they seemed, and we don't know where we are! Somehow, we've gotten lost in a forest inhabited by goblins, spooky though not actually menacing. There's a swirling sensation accompanied by dark intimations in the bass, chromatic muted trumpets, and repeated sustained high chords in the flutes; the effect is weirdly haunting. After a while a commotion in C develops, drums crescendo, and then suddenly pure terror -- a high trumpet playing fortissimo. By some process of pure magic, the music suddenly recovers its former equanimity and adult and child (who turn out to be one and the same) find themselves back in the sunny meadow. What sublime irony, and how true to human nature -- when we see something uncanny that disturbs us, we try to put it behind us, forget it. Mahler alone is capable of evoking such feelings. Only a magician could have written the Fourth, and Mahler's achievement here is just as great as in the very different late works, not to mention the middle symphonies.
I could cite other personal examples, as could any Mahlerian. We might disagree about particulars, but each of us carries away something essential from Mahler's music and is enriched by it. And we are quite confident that the experience is qualitatively the same from listener to listener.
Adorno approaches the subject of our response to Mahler's music and what it means through his own experiences of it. But what a listener! It's as if a very learned friend with a doctorate in Mahler stopped by to discuss the subject over tea and ended up staying all week. A gifted writer and philosopher, as well as a professionally trained composer who studied with Berg, Adorno discusses all the symphonies except the Tenth and is always interesting even when you disagree with him. Musicological jargon is mostly avoided, although philosophical-rhetorical terms abound (he loves the word "aporia").
Two caveats. First, the treatment is vulnerable to the charge of "over-intellectualization". One recalls Mahler's reply to William Ritter, an early admirer:"... I find myself much less complicated than your image of me, which could almost throw me into a state of panic." It seems that we, and particularly Adorno, are the complicated ones. We project our feelings onto the music, which seems to invite them to an extent that would surprise even the composer. The mystery of why this is so, and the multifariousness of Mahler, the capacity of his music to be offensive, highly questionable, fascinating, and sublime all at the same time, form the subject of the book.
Second, and more seriously, he disparages Mahler's "ominous positivity" and thereby underestimates the Eighth Symphony at least (readers may agree that the finale of the Seventh is problematic; he does not discuss the extraordinary Tenth, which achieves a wholly serene, positive conclusion). But the positive in Mahler is an essential part of his dynamic disequilibrium; without it, there would be no aporia and the music would degenerate into mere cynicism. Most of the symphonies follow a pattern -- conflict, followed by attempted reconciliation and reconstruction. This process is entirely sincere, and if it fails even in Mahler's hands, it's because he's attempting to do the impossible. Even in the Sixth, the most "tragic" and "despairing" of the symphonies, a good performance will reveal powerful updrafts. To deny the positive in Mahler is to chop him in two. That Adorno's book is nonetheless required reading is testimony to the value of his other observations.
Who then is this book for? It is best for Mahlerians of long standing, those who are well past the first flush of discovery and have regained their musical equilibrium so to speak, and who want to put Mahler in perspective, or even just "share" opinions with an uncommonly intelligent and sensitive critic.

the musical crevices and fault-lines are probed with Adorno
By A Customer
If you know anything about Theodor Adorno, you might well be familiar with the entire edifice of western cultural and philosophic thought; Kant,Hegel,Kierkegaard, and Marx, the history of art, literature, painting and music. Less film,a realm Adorno never got to know. Here in Mahler,we have a concise profile of this one time neglected composer, long misunderstood, even today. I recall a rehearsal with Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic who couldn't quite understand Bernstein's raving from the heart, for clarity yet passion. Adorno knew Mahler's art much better than Mahler ever did for we learn this from Adorno, that Mahler simply abandoned himself to his own intuition to resolve his creative problems. Each chapter in this masterwork in miniature is self-sustaining. In the chapter "Tone" Adorno reveals the basic music materials of Mahler his orchestral pallete. The high positioned violins,in uncomfortable registers where they loose their souls to a menanced, shrill, thin timbre. The string section for Mahler is creatively undisciplined to begin with, each playing differing roles, each contributing its own independence, as in the opening of Mahler's "Ninth" Symphony, the melody tossed between the violins, tremoli in the violas, and the contrbass above or equal in register to all with harmonics. Mahler's progressiveness was in pure content,he was not one to pursue "tangible innovations" but secured his tenuous position with the diatonic mode, familiar scales and harmonic surfaces. A chiaroscuro of means (schatten) the shadows he creates with reliefs of foreground and background. Tonality is not so much renewed as an unheard voice enters the stage, Mahler's voice cracks,is overstrethched, the various woodwind passages like in the "Scherzo" of his "Seventh" Symphony. The forced tone is itself an expressive innovation of his own making a premonition of the darker legubrious brooding up the road in the orchestral works of Arnold Schoenberg. In fact we find ev! ery bit of these darker pages in Mahler before the horrors which await the citizens of Eastern Europe, even up to Bosnia. Adorno's focus is always how Mahler creates meaning within familiar confines, the roads that lead to simple harmonies. He disrupts the stability of rhythm,of gesture that once was, the familiar in Mahler's orchestral context becomes something quite different, no longer can the romantic symphony depend on redemption. Bruckner could depend on this, for he already found his spirituality, whereas Mahler spent his life in pursuit of it . Adorno in the chapter "Novel" reveals the non-progressive side of Mahler. He needed to depend on some stability so his musical characters come and go untarnished at times, the lowlife natural trombone,to the intimate/elegant solo violin, and the cracking horn moments in Mahler. This is where we find "Stufenreichtum" the richness of texture, the musical thread running from the full orchestral (tutti) everyone's voice heard, to the single voice the solos. This is Mahler's context from the distance "in sehr weiter entfernung" to the immediate. It is this expressive immediacy, he learned from Beethoven that gives way to developed chaos as his life wears away. The overblown vacuous "Eighth Symphony" resolved nothing for his real creativity, and the "Ninth" the ideas begin toward the irrational,Mahler is serious even in the "Rondo-Burleske" from the "Ninth",the almost improvised gesture reminded me of Charles Ives, who was writing just about the same time. Adorno's chapter "Variant-Form" we learn Mahler's technique progressed away from what an academic would consider "good" Mahler needn't be as glib as Richard Strauss, nor as consummate as Wagner. He learned music in another way and pointed toward a profound goal. A goal in which his music simply breaks its own voice "Durchbruch" as Adorno mentions where there was no comfort in traditional moments. Adorno opens thi! s expressive vault of Mahler and we can see Mahler again. As recently as Pierre Boulez in his ongoing recordings with The Chicago Symphony we find a Mahler quite as a turning point to the 20th century. Well Boulez brings Mahler into our century whether we want him there or not. Boulez brings a sublime ugliness at times to Mahler's simplicity, the functional predictable movements of harmony creates a kind of timbral dirt. Mahler wanted this. No we are not done with his marvelous "Symphonies" we can contemplate them for some time.

Good booklet of affirmations for sissies
By Jackie Goodsissy
This is a fun little book by Mistress Dede. Just thoughts and affirmations that you can repeat to remind your mind of your progressing feminization. Pick the ones that mean the most to you or match your goals and repeat them mentally or out loud to keep yourself on your sissy path.

An excellent set of positive statements that will keep sissies focused ...
By SissyGurl
An excellent set of positive statements that will keep sissies focused on their feminization goals and feeling good about their progress so far. I guarantee that concentrating on your transformation everyday by daily repetition of these phrases will keep you from sliding back into those horrid masculine habits. Eventually it will become obvious to everyone how much of a sissy you really are. Once there is no longer any believably manly public image left to maintain, sissies will quickly adapt to their proper social status.

I use these tapes as part of my feminine voice training. The narrator's voice is a good model for pansies to practice with. By imitating her voice, you will improve your ability to pass as a woman, while increasing your desire to try to pass. This kills two birds with one stone. Eventually your stones will probably dwindle away too.

Can be effective.
By Leeiah
I like the book, it has a good purpose and a unique way to get you in the mindset of feminization etc, I like the reasons behind why this is important to do and it makes sense on why something like this can be effective. I guess the one thing is how much are you suppose to go over it per day? But yeah for the price it's worth it, I hope there is another book by her with more affirmations as a series of processes of going to book 1 to book 2 etc only one can dream LoL but yeah get the book if feminization is your goal or to get someone else into it.

Sisters in the Wilderness: The Challenge of Womanist God-Talk, by Delores S. Williams

This landmark work first published 20 years ago helped establish the field of African-American womanist theology. It is widely regarded as a classic text in the field.

Drawing on the biblical figure of Hagar mother of Ishmael, cast into the desert by Abraham and Sarah, but protected by God Williams finds a proptype for the struggle of African-American women. African slave, homeless exile, surrogate mother, Hagar s story provides an image of survival and defiance appropriate to black women today. Exploring the themes implicit in Hagar s story poverty and slavery, ethnicity and sexual exploitation, exile and encounter with God Williams traces parallels in the history of African-American women from slavery to the present day. A new womanist theology emerges from this shared experience, from the interplay of oppressions on account of race, sex and class. Sisters in the Wilderness offers a telling critique of theologies that promote liberation but ignore women of color. This is a book that defined a new theological project and charted a path that others continue to explore.

A Foundational, Groundbreaking, and Revelatory Text
By Micah Wimmer
This book is one of the first (and finest) works of Womanist Theology, which is specifically attuned to the needs and concerns of black women. Written in response to Black Theology (which focused upon the needs of black men) and Feminist Theology (which was focused upon the needs of white women), Womanist Theology was a necessary addition to the world of Liberation Theology as neither Black nor Feminist Theology spoke specifically on behalf of black women. This is where Williams comes in. Drawing primarily from the story of Hagar from the book of Genesis as well as from the novels of Alice Walker and Zora Neale Hurston, Williams shows how much the story of Hagar mirrors the experience of black women in America today. She also offers stringent, fair, and necessary critiques of prominent Black Theologians' work and traditional theological notions such as that of penal substitution atonement theory. Her critique of the valorization of the cross, while only a few pages, is one of the most stunning pieces of theological writing I have ever encountered. While the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, this a book that must be read by all who care about theology in the twenty-first century. This is a text that must be understood and grappled with, but it is also one that we must take seriously. Despite it being one of the first works of Womanist Theology, it is of far more than mere historical importance.

AN EXCELLENT “WOMANIST” ANALYSIS OF THE BLACK DENOMINATIONAL CHURCHES, AND MORE
By Steven H Propp
Author Delores S. Williams wrote in the Preface to this 1993 book, “The African-America denominational churches told black women they were ‘somebody’ in a society that hated their race and spurned their womanhood…. Historically, however, the African-American denominational churches have also been places where black women, aside from venting their pain in emotional response, have come for decidedly theological reasons… the African-American denominational churches function like two-edged swords. They sustain black women emotionally and provide ‘theological space’ for black women’s faith expressions. But they suppress and help to make invisible black women’s thought and culture. Through their uncritical use of the Bible and through their patriarchal theology, many… prohibit women from asking many critical questions about women’s oppression and about the support and reinforcement of that oppression by the Bible and by the Christian church in all its male dominated forms.” (Pg. xiii)

She continues, “Today a theological corrective is developing that has considerable potential for bringing black women’s experience into theology so that black women will see the need to transform the sexist character of the churches and their theology. The corrective… is called womanist theology… womanist theology is a prophetic voice reminding African-American denominational churches of their mission to seek justice and voice for all their people, of which black women are the overwhelming majority in their congregations.” (Pg. xiii)

She adds, “womanist theology especially concerns itself with the faith, survival and freedom-struggle of African-American women… Like white feminist theology, womanist theology affirms the full humanity of women. But womanist theology also critiques white feminist participation in the perpetuation of white supremacy which continues to dehumanize black women. Yet womanist theology is organically related to black male liberation theology and feminist theology in its various expressions… Womanist theology, however, also branches off in its own direction, introducing new issues and constructing new analytical categories needed to interpret simultaneously black women’s and the black community’s experience in the context of theology. Nonetheless, womanist theology is usually non-separatist and dialogical.” (Pg. xiv)

She points out, “the mother of the church exerts considerable authority in the church family. But more often than not she uses her power in a way that does not challenge the power and authority of the patriarchal head of the church, usually a male preacher. She is often called upon to be a healer of relationships within the congregation. She is well versed in and knows how to pass along the highest values for living the Christian life. Her power and influence often extend beyond the church into her community, because she has been empowered by one of the central authority agents of the community---the African-American church---to provide care and nurture for the children of God.” (Pg. 79)

She suggests, “Though African-Americans have a long way to go in shaping their understanding of Hagar, they are encouraged to believe that the use of non-Christian and non-Jewish sources in biblical interpretation can provide insights that help black theologians speak more meaningfully about African roots and Christian gospel. But these African sources will be of little value to African-American theologians if they are basically androcentric and female-exclusive.” (Pg. 153)

She asserts, “Humankind is, then, redeemed through Jesus’ ministerial vision of life and not through his death. There is nothing divine in the blood of the cross. God does not intend black women’s surrogacy experience. Neither can Christian faith affirm such an idea. Jesus did not come to be a surrogate. Jesus came for life, to show humans a perfect vision of ministerial relation that humans had very little knowledge of. As Christians, black women cannot forget the cross, but neither can they glorify it. To do so is to glorify suffering and to render their exploitation sacred. To do so is to glorify the sin of defilement.” (Pg. 167) Later, she adds, “Black women are, then, more apt to see Jesus Christ as spirit sustaining survival and liberation efforts of the black community. Thus black women’s question about Jesus Christ is not about the relation of his humanity to his divinity or about the relation of the historical Jesus to the Christ of faith. Black women’s stories… attest to black women’s belief in Jesus/Christ/God involved in their daily affairs and supporting them.” (Pg. 203)

She notes, “Though many white feminists speak of multilayered oppression… they do not give serious attention to the ways they participate in and help perpetuate the terrible social and cultural value systems that oppress all black people. Very few if any discussions of patriarchy give full and serious attention to women’s oppression of women.” (Pg. 185)

But she acknowledges, “Many feminists and womanists agree that a serious and critical review of Christian symbols, doctrines and practice is necessary in order to determine precisely how and if women’s oppression can be supported by the religion… common ground exists between some feminists and womanists who are reviewing Christian doctrine.” (Pg. 199)

She asserts, “I believe the black church is the heart of hope in the black community’s experience of oppression, survival struggle and its historic efforts toward complete liberation… The black church cannot be made respectable because it is already sacralized by the pain and resurrection of thousands and thousands of victims… It cannot be made racial because it is too real for false distinctions. It cannot be made more male then female because it is already both, equally… It cannot be made political because it is perfect justice.” (Pg. 205)

This is a very stimulating, challenging, and thought-provoking book, that will be of immense interest and value to those interested in womanism, black theology, the black church, and related matters.

Review

“Voddie Baucham’s book is both scriptural and fresh, aware of biblical principles, cultural trends, and human nature. I especially appreciate his expository approach, by which he brings God’s Word into every apologetic conversation. I recommend it as an excellent introduction to apologetics as it needs to be practiced today.”

“I am a fan of any book that takes apologetics out of the tower and puts it in the pew. Baucham does a wonderful job of just that. His pastoral style and sensitivity stand out as he takes a method of apologetics straight from the Scriptures and lays out how everyone can defend the faith with confidence.”
—C. Michael Patton, Founder, President, and fellow, The Credo House, Edmond, Oklahoma

“Voddie Baucham’s expository approach to apologetics reminds us of the power of God’s Word for responding to objections to the Christian faith. This book hits all the right notes and guides the reader to think biblically, confessionally and theologically when engaging with those who reject Christianity. Baucham’s book will encourage the church to engage unbelief from the perspective of Scripture, rather than from a lesser perspective.”
—K. Scott Oliphint, Professor of Apologetics and Systematic Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary;author,Covenantal Apologetics

“Any biblical apologetic must rely on the Bible itself for its content and its force. Expositing the Bible in clear and cogent theological categories is essential for apologetics. By learning and applying the truths of this book, Christians can become better prepared to give a defense of the hope that is within them.”
—Douglas Groothuis,Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Apologetics and Ethics Master's Degree, Denver Seminary; author, Christian Apologetics

Great Addition to the Vantilian Tradition
By dthomas
For those familiar with Greg Bahnsen or Cornelius Van Til, the presuppositional methodology presented by Baucham is nothing new; however, the way in which Voddie presents "takes apologetics out of the tower and puts it in the pew," as Patton states in his endorsement of the book. His particular application of this method to preaching, teaching, and discipleship helps to further the work of those in the Vantilian vein of encouraging every believer in engaging the unbelieving worldviews; that apologetics is not only for the "elites," but for every believer.

The book can be divided into two (possibly three) parts:

1.) Introducing the Expository Method (Ch. 1-4)
2.) Application of the Expository Method (Ch. 5-9)

The third possible division of the book would separate chapter 9 "Preaching and Teaching Like an Expository Apologist" and the appendix from chapters 5-8 as 2.) Application for the Layman (5-8) and 3.) Application for Preaching and Teaching (9 w/appendix).

However one divides it, the book is a very practical and challenging addition to the Vantilian tradition, which drives home the point that every Christian everywhere is called to engage in apologetics; and that our goal in apologetics is not to win arguments, but to evangelize — to share the gospel.

Proving and Preaching From Scripture
By Zach Barnhart
As the already post-Christian society we live in grows more post-Christian by the day, it is becoming increasingly more important that we pinpoint exactly how to defend our faith, stand for truth, and engage differing opinions lovingly and willingly in conversation. The widespread reason many of us Christians struggle to do this is, as we say, “we don’t know how.” But after reading Expository Apologetics by popular preacher and apologist Voddie Baucham, we will find ourselves eqipped and even motivated for such engagements. In this succinct and practical book, Baucham has helped us see the urgency to be apologists, and helped us with methods and practices for the battle ahead. In this book, we learn about the method of doing “expository apologetics,” a term coined by Baucham to explain his process.

There are three main ideas Baucham stresses in Expository Apologetics–being biblical, being clear, and being conversational (20). Ironically, this is the overall structure of the book. Baucham starts with a firm biblical foundation in his argument for the art of expository apologetics (chapters 1-4). He then discusses how we assimilate the daunting task of apologetics into a clear, easy to remember system for ourselves and for others (chapters 5-6). Finally, Baucham spends a great deal of time talking about how we engage in conversation as apologists (chapters 7-9).

There are a few particular chapters that stood out to me while reading. Chapter 4 is about Paul’s “expository apologetic.” Baucham essentially demonstrates how Paul is a perfect example of someone who uses this technique. Walking through predominately Romans, we see how Paul literally engages with his audience of Jews. While writing the famous epistle, he stops himself periodically to answer objections he knows his audience is bound to have. Paul then firmly refutes such objections with careful exposition of Scripture, combined with elements of logic, philosophy, and metaphor, all designed to help the audience clearly understand. Baucham sums up Paul’s apologetic ministry well here:

“Paul’s approach to apologetics was not dependent solely upon his ability to comprehend and interact with random facts. Instead, he was dependent upon God’s revelation as his primary and ultimate source of authority. Nor is this to say that there were never times when he made reference to truths revealed elsewhere, or that we are prohibited from doing the same. However, we must bear in mind that those things must always be on the periphery of our approach to apologetics as opposed to the center. Scripture must always remain at the center” (75).

Chapter 5 is an excellent defense of the importance of creeds, confessions, and catechisms, and how they support and inform our quest for better apologetics. Baucham, a noted proponent of catechisms, has excellently demonstrated the necessity of using these tools to absorb truth and to communicate it effectively and accurately.

Finally, another highlight chapter is Chapter 8, “The Expository Apologetic Waltz.” I loved the allegory of a waltz and how it is likened to apologetics. I think it’s a great descriptor of how we actually operate in conversations with skeptics or seekers (144-145). Baucham places large emphasis on presuppositional apologetics throughout the book, and shows its importance notably in this chapter. There is even an appendix in the back that is an explicit example of how we do expository apologetics.

There has been quite a bit of writing devoted to doing apologetics, but many of them focus on specific scientific arguments or getting the right counter-punches down. Expository Apologetics, however, desires to help us understand the theological implications for why we enter this arena, and more so how to engage a culture that’s frankly growing tired of listening.

I recommend Expository Apologetics to anyone trying to better learn how to share or defend their faith, and how to do it biblically.

Answering Objections with the Word of God
By Don Haflich
Cornelius Van Til defined apologetics as the "vindication of the Christian philosophy of life against the various forms of the non-Christian philosophy of life". Voddie Baucham uses this definition as a framework to build a solid apologetic methodology in his newest volume Expository Apologetics: Answering Objections with the Power of the Word. Before you object to the title and claim that Reformed folk are running around creating new titles for a decades-old method, let's dive into this material and find out what's at the heart of the matter.

More than once Voddie claims "the goal is the Gospel". He contends that we must move people from skepticism, or even outright atheism, into a more biblical world view by using the Word as a "bulwark against the tendency to forget how hard it is to believe in the face of constant opposition". He also argues, repeatedly, that we must be committed to apologetics as a consequence, not an innocent bystander of, our commitment to evangelism. That single point makes this volume stand out from the rest not only as an apologetic tool, but one we can all use in our evangelistic enterprise.

This volume does three things very well that I have not found among other introductory works on this vast subject. In Chapter Five we explore the ancient Creeds, Confessions, and Catechism of the church in order to create thriving disciples of Christ. He dispels the myth that apologetics is for the PhD trained Christian in telling us right off the bat that, "when most Christians think apologetics training, they think philosophy, logic, and debate. However the key tools for training the expository apologist are creeds, confessions, and catechisms." He pounds this point in even further by saying that catechism is the best apologetics training tool we have in our arsenal. A bold statement when one thinks of what type of volume this is.

Alright, I know what you're thinking at this point. "Isn't all that other stuff useful though?" Baucham does not seek to dismiss those other disciplines but they must be in service to the Word of God. We must begin our foundation for any argument on the self-revelation of God. He does not mean that everything needs to be quoted chapter and verse in every conversation, though that wouldn't hurt, but we need to move people in the direction of the gospel. That I confess is impossible without mentioning the Word in the process.

The second unique aspect of this volume is the use of the Decalogue or what us commoners call the Ten Commandments. Voddie expands this content across two chapters. He begins by showing the division of the Ten Commandments in that the first four are vertical, meaning that the first four emphasize our duty to God, and the last six emphasize our duty to other people. I admit I have not thought even that deeply about the commandments or their ethical implications in my day-to-day life, an area I plan to build in the coming days. If we're honest many of us have not thought of these Ten Commandments, and why should we? Not many of us are murders, not many of us steal or bear false witness do we?

Many of us forget that God has set a standard of righteousness not only for the believer but for those outside the fold. Voddie does a masterful job of making the material at this point entirely understandable. He points to the three-fold use of the law in expounding on the commanded obedience which has gone out to us and yet we suppress. He tells us that the "Moral Law encompasses laws that have always been and always will be the same for all people in all places and for all times. These laws reflect the very character of God."

Do you see what he did there? He brought us all into account under the Moral Law by saying that it is a reflection of the very character of God. When we are not acting in accord with the Moral Law we are acting in a manner inconsistent with the character of the very God who fashioned us in His image. We are what Paul called, "suppressing the truth in unrighteousness" (Romans 1:18), a very serious indictment indeed. C.S. Lewis thought very highly of the Moral Law which is why he dragged out his material for four chapters in Mere Christianity.

[Tweet "We have to get outside of our bubbles and interact with real people who have real questions. @DonHaflich @Crossway"]

The final thing I think Voddie does extremely well is putting it all together in a way that is imminently useful for the budding apologist. He gives us three steps to uncovering error in peoples world views. Step One tells us that we must show the other person in the conversation that their world view is inconsistent. We can do this by simply beginning a dialogue on almost any topic. Step Two tells us that we must show them where they are counterfeiting the Word of God in their own philosophy. If we are in the Word daily, this step will be a bit easier for us. Step Three drops the bomb on them when we show them what the real thing looks like.

This volume should be handed out like candy on Halloween. Christians need to be soaked in the Word and understand their own world views before they can engage those with opposing ones. We as parents must drench our children in the Word which teaches them how to think and how to hold up world views to the light of the Gospel. Expository Apologetics gives us the tools we need to begin to use our minds for the glory of God. Surely we must go deeper but this is an excellent foot in the doorway to a house bought and furnished just for us. We have the world at our fingertips and they are desperately searching for something true, good, and holy. We have all of those things living in us by the inheritance of the Holy Spirit. Why not share that with out neighbors, coworkers, and those we meet on the subway?
