Good collection

The Galton Case alone is worth five stars, Ross MacDonald pulls together interesting story and character transformation. Ross MacDonald's reputation seems to have slipped in recent years and I'm not sure why.

$100 a day, plus expenses

Nicely done stories, very much in the spirit of Raymond Chandler (who is my very favorite) or Dashiell Hammett. As in Chandler's stories, the detective here is trying to make a living, so his regular line about $100 a day, plus expenses, is important to his character. You can get Chandler, Hammett, and a couple of other fine collections of Crime Novels in editions from the "Library of America" publisher. MacDonald is a more recent writer. I like that he sends me scurrying to the dictionary every now and then. A few MacDonaldisms from the three novels in this volume (don't worry, no plot spoilers):
"Dr. Willis was a small thin man with a dedicated scientist look, intensified by steel-rimmed glasses. He handled himself as if his hand, his fingers, even his eyes and mouth were technical instruments, useful but not alive; and the real Dr. Willis sat hidden in his skull directing their external operations. He didn't even blink when I told him that there had been another killing." (p. 564).
"The [hotel] room provided roles for only two people. I guessed what mine would be if we stayed in it much longer. Her body was purring at me like a tiger, the proverbial kind of tiger which is dangerous to mount and even more dangerous to dismount." (p. 491).
"I got out on the right-hand side and walked around the front of the car toward him. As long as I was in my car, he had been yelling at a machine, a Cadillac yelling at a Ford. Now we were both men, and he was shorter and narrower than I was. He stopped yelling. His whole personality changed. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, as if to disclaim the evil spirit that had invaded him and made him yell at me." (p. 430).
"Nell and several bathrobed patients were watching a television drama about a pair of lawyers, father and son. They paid no attention to me. I was only a real-life detective, unemployed at the moment. But not, I hoped, for long." (p. 310).
"The milk in the refrigerator was sour. I shaved and put on clean linen and my other suit and went out for breakfast. I read the morning paper over my bacon and eggs." (p. 577).

What can I say? This, especially the is Ross Macdonald at his very best. That's especially true of The Galton Case, which is considered one of if not THE best of the Lew Archer novels.
