All three kinds of rocks are described in brief sentences and illustrated. Additional information about crystals and erosion is included. Weathering by sand, wind, water, and plants is illustrated by a series of clear photographs. Specialized terms and their definitions appear at the bottom of each page. Occasionally the print is difficult to read when placed on a darker background. Examples of the various ways fossils can form are given as well as examples of how rocks are used. A section on dinosaurs, fossil plants, and fossil fuels is followed by three suggestions of "Things to Make and Do" such as a plaster of paris fossil mold and starting a rock collection. Several sizes of type are used to call attention to changes in topic. Magnifications of crystals, bones, and rock strata are superimposed on the background in circular sections. Coffee Table Book for Adults?

Designed for young readers, the book was a great help to me, as I am writing a book about rocks. Photographs and graphics are stunning and large enough to awe young readers. Very logical division into 23 sections, each 2 pages long. Full-page photographs show readers what is so spectacular about rock formations. This book could serve as a "coffee table" book. Truly, no one could resist picking it; then just try to get it away from them before he or she finishes it! Children deserve to learn about the world around them. This book is a gift for young people.

My 3rd grader expressed an interest in rocks and fossils ...

My 3rd grader expressed an interest in rocks and fossils so we bought this book and dig kit for Christmas. It was one of the first thing she opened and she has taken it to school a couple times to do reports. Aligns well with the 3rd grade Common Core curriculum.
