I don’t know what I expected when I agreed to the promo-tour, visiting US army bases across Iraq to promote my upcoming Miss April Playmate spread, with all the other 2016 Playmates. I wish I could have been as excited as the other girls, okay with being reduced to the role of a ‘glorified hooker.’
There’s at least there’s one soldier who doesn’t seem interested: Corporal Gage Daniels. He’s quiet, damaged, powerful. I thought I’d be safe if I stuck around him — a perfect solution to my problem.
But he’s a prick who wants nothing to do with me.
Without him, I may as well be a piece of raw meat to those hungry dogs that call themselves marines. Unluckily for him, his superiors aren’t giving him an option.
Unluckily for me, the heat between us is becoming explosive.
But I just want to get home alive, without a controversy to ruin my blossoming career.

Not Your Typical Military Romance - A Darker Side

The story is not your usual military romance. It is about a group of soldiers that are stationed in the Middle East and are waiting to be sent to a mission that will most likely end in their death. The military imports in groups of women regularly to keep them occupied.
When Playboy wants some publicity, they send their 2016 centerfolds and the runners-up to entertain the soldiers. One of those women, Ashley, is not happy about the situation. She has not desire to service the men. There is only one that seems uninterested and safe.
Gage is there and he has no interest in the prostitutes. He notices there is something different about this group, and in particular Ashley, but is not looking to spend any time with them. He pretty much spends his time working out and making sarcastic remarks to others.
It definitely takes awhile to warm up to Gage. He seems like a real arrogant jerk. He doesn't seem to really connect with anyone. As much as he is attracted to Ashley, he prefers to stereotype her as an actress with no brain and just selling her body to get publicity.
Ashley is smart and tries to connect with Gage. She sees something the reader does not see at that point that is attractive about him. He does protect her at times from other soldiers. It seems hard to believe she would fall so hard and so fast for him. She is also quick to believe someone she should not have any trust in.
I think the book would have been much better if Gage showed some more warmth and humanity earlier in the story. It would have worked better for me. It took too long for him to show his feelings.

Gage is stationed on a remote outpost in Iraq with about 20 other men he does his best to avoid. Playboy sends the upcoming year's Playmates, runners up and a reporter to the outpost to boost the men's spirits and promote the magazine. All of the men, but Gage, go crazy. Gage doesn't want any part of it. Ashley, Miss April, is an up and coming actress. She only did Playboy for exposure for her career. All of the women, but Ashley, go crazy. Ashley wants to do the promotion and get out of there, but all of the men have their eye on her. One night she asks Gage to hide her. Gage doesn't want to get involved, but in the end he does.
The reporter catches Gage and Ashley together the next morning, which starts a chain of events neither one are very happy with.
This is a good story. Ashley is likable, but Gage was hard for me to care about until late in the book.

I received this free ARC for my honest review. This book had me feeling some kind of way. It was a storyline that was hot, sad, shocking, and disturbing. At first I didn't like the main characters Gage and Ashley. It took me awhile to warm up to them and the story. I had a hard time finding other characters in this book I liked. Horny military men not caring that women brought to them were in a bad way for various reasons turned me off. Even the Playmate angle had me wondering if I should continue reading the book. I'm glad I did, because the story does get more interesting. I like bad boys, and military men, but I personally like a storylines that starts out less pervy. It sets a tone that is hard to shake. I would read another book from Ms. Blanc.
